Default Homemade harpoon

Have been making my own gaffs for years. With the expense of all the other sword Gear I've recently purchased I've decided to try and build my own Harpoon  .( plus I need something to do while the wind blows) Toying with a couple drawings and a couple different materiel combinations. Is it essential that the dart detaches from the pole itself. I'm on the fence about wether to make the shaft steel, or oak. Sure I'll have to try a couple to get it right :-k . Any suggestions :?: As always any input will be appreciated.

I made mine very inexpensively. 20" 3/16 steel rod tapered to fit the lilly, inserted 8" into 1-1/2 round wooden railing. I made mine short to fit the confines of my boat. Total length is 7-1/2ft. It's relatively lightweight, easy to maneuver, and only seconds to "load" using a #64 rubberband to tension the dart cable. And since it's wood, it floats.

Lilly? Thats the proper term for the buisness end I take it. UB think I could get you to take a quick pic, and post it. If its a hassle don't sweat it, your description was very helpful. Got a good chuckle out of that TD
Thanks a bunch,

Capt K and I are going to do a little commercial snapper digging tonight, to drum up some more funds for our newfound swordfishing addiction. Allready can see I want an 80, a swordlight to try( gonna keep the hydroglow for a backup) a poon, jap balls, couple more discos and a purple lp, sato's wind on kit, escape proof swivels, and a boxof 12/0 owners clipperton style  . Took us 4 snapper runs to just get our bare minimums. But of course, like everybody else, I'm after a donk now. Like to be prepared when we do stumble across our first bigun. And besides in my youth I squandered $ in much worse ways :high .Thanks for the tips

Sorry man... my harpoon is on my boat, 4-stories up, in rack storage. And yes, Lilly is the proper term for the metal dart.

I made my own Harpoon it's 13' long. I made it out of a length of aluminum pipe sechedule 80, pluged the end with a pice of round bar drilled and taped plug to take a pice of threaded steal for the dart tip. It's light for its length The whole thing cost about $60 and you can get the part at an aluminum supply house theres one behinde lesters.

Use the HydroGlow instead of getting another light, and use the $ to buy a harpoon. It is a VERY important item. Lots of fish are lost at the boat when it's time to use the flyer or harpoon. Use something tried and tested. Unless you catch enough swordfish that it's just fun to get them with gear that you make yourself, like making your own rods.

For 130 bucks, it doesnt pay to try to make a homemade one.
I do like the ones put together by So-Lo as well.

I made one like UB's years ago. The problem is that when the wood got wet, it warped. Kind of tough to get a get a quality shot with that handicap.

I've made my own gaffs, have one that is over 25 yrs old, still use it, so I made my own poon. Wooden dowel, drilled out, stainless shaft epoxied in. Shaft and dart at fishermans outfitters. It's not about the money, it's about the satisfaction. My old gaff has the souls of many fish visit every nite. I am sure that you can build a good one. Use some sort of varnish to waterproof the wood and wrap twine around the grip areas.
