Default Attaching LP or Seamaster to wind on (best way ?)

Lately I have been told that it is especially important to fish your Electralumes (Particularly Seamasters) at least 20' away from the bait.

(Theory being UV seamaster is bright & may blind fish somewhat?)

I generally was fishing 12-15' leaders, and would just attach LP or Seamaster w heavy 250-300 snap.

Now that I am going towards wind ons, need a clean way to attach LP 20' away w/o risk of losing light, or interfering w wind on.

I liked Beermans method of beefing up some waxed thread over wind on & using long line clip, but am fearful of losing a light. (IE LP clip opens or gets wrapped up etc.)

(Not all of us can afford the "stoplight" approach & have influential friends in high places. )

Do you all trust the long line clips to hold your lights?

Barry has a cool gig where he uses a snap & piece of rubber band, so light can slide down when fish is on.
(I am just afraid it could slide off, if fish busts off, or we get bit off by shark.)

Anyone have a better suggestion. Thanks in advance.

Crazy glue  No simple answer.I went to the snap swivel and rubber band my self. Some guys also put a light stick closer to the bait and tape it on so if lp slid it would stop at stick :???:

we use a long line clip and clip it to the part of the window where it seperates and meets your bimini.

Or we use wax line on the main line and use the long line clip to the waxlline loop... longline clips are very easy to pull off under a crazy sitaution...

I remove the LL clip, and I use two #64 rubber bands and attach above the windon connection. Have not lost a light or weight yet; on the weights I only use one. Those #64's are strong and hold up very well and to not cause any distress to the line or connections. Just make sure you are wearing gloves when you go to break them off the line, they pop the hand hard

QQ, good deal.

One more, is there a "correct" way to tie waxed loops to mainline.
I have been using series of half hitches, but find that sometimes the buggers still slide on me.

Thx,
E

There are a few ways. But i find the best way to to about 6 half stiches on each side and then finish each side off like you would a bimini.... that sucker will never slide.

I like the LL clip. I wrap a rubberband around the line to beef it up, or use a piece of silicone fuel tubing, then clamp the LL clip onto that. But, I also prefer to hang my weight from the light, so it's a single item to remove from the line. No yanking on bands to break 'em.

Lights get lost. Fact of life. Ask EmiJess.

E replace longline clip with snap swivel. Use a small rubber band and attach it to the line, then put snap thru rubber band and over the line. When your light gets to the tip of your rod keep reelin and break the rubber band and the light will slide down.

Just clip the damn thing to the wind-on, if its 250 or bigger the light will not fall off, foul up or slide. I reel all my lights right to the tip, and keep cranking, the wind on will run right through the clip, that way if the fish takes off your light is still on there. I do the same with my weights. Never ever lost a light or weight, had a tangle or any trouble with this method. Its fast and works. You know how fast i get them out eric. Trust me. Just keep changing your clips<2.00> when they start to get loose.

By the way, thanks for leaving the sword grounds all to me the last few nights. Its been fun

I have lost a light using a long line clip but I must have installed it improperly. I still use the LL clips but I pay closer attention now.

I also have my weight and light together so when it comes up, unclip the LL clip and now you have the weight and light off your line and out of the way.

Eric, to elminate your fear of getting sharked, you can do 2 things. Put a bead above the snap swivel, Or if you do not like beads like me, I attach a diamond flasher VIA a small snap swivel right to the main snap swivel. Now your LP would have to pass over the strobe (not happening) If you do go with snap swivel method, You have to find the perfect size. You want it big enough to wear it does not go into your tip, it hits and falls down the line. It looks scarey the first few times but once you trust it your good to go!

If I were to use LL clips I would do just as Capt joe does. If you put wax thread under it the LL clip will have to be removed, and you know how I fee about that especialy on those long bent butts. Just put it on your mono right before the dacron and keep reeling!

To Joe: Cool, couple bites last few nites huh? U are braver than most, as I hear it was "sporty".

Flatsfish B, OK, right size swivel, maybe a bead stopper & we're off.

Turtle,

Fuzzy Details, we lost an LP Tues night off longline clip. Had a big fish, smack the tip rod & ran off about 300+ yards w over 20lbs of heat.
When hook pulled, I almost fell back wards, and Longline Clip & LP were gone. Strange stuff happens !!

The way Tutle described is the best way to do it. The ball bearing swivel lets the light twist without twisting the whole line and should the fish chose to tailwalk or jump the light isnt flying around causing pulled hooks.

Ya I like turtles method also... this way you dont have to worry about the line going slack while trying to get the clip off... whatever works for you...

Can't take any credit for that. It's actually Johnny's method. I don't even fish wind-on's. :high

Word, like no twist / tangle aspect as well !!
The trick I suppose is to use a snap small enough that it won't slide over main snap swivel after it slides down.

Thanks all

Generally you have to risk a light every now and then. We attach ours to the windon with a snap around the line and a 64 rubber band so they break off and slide down.
