TRUE. Your toast without a good reel. For a big powerful fish down and dirty you'll appreciate that two speed reel

Not neccesary IMO, but doesnt hurt to have if needed, and if your gonna spend the $$$ on reels might as well pitch in the few extra and have it!!

Let me ask you this question:
You are going for a bike ride and sometimes you are going to have to slog it up steep terrain with lots of resistance and sometimes you are going to have to pedal really fast on the road. Are you going to pick a single speed bike or a bike that can do both jobs equally well? |

2 speed is nice, but IMO not needed. the only time I have ever thought about using it was when I was only at 14-16lbs of drag, the line just slips of the reel. Once you get up to 20-25 you are able to move the fish and actually pump the rod and reel the slack like your acustom to. Low gear is used when you cant pump because line just slides off the reel so you slowly just gain line. either method works. Like most said, if buying new reels go 2 speed Tiagra

No thanks, I will keep it simple with a single speed reel.
Just another thing to break or have an inexperienced angler mess around with.

The only time 2 speed is a must is if you are fighting a fish out of the rod holder  and you cant pump the rod.

I am very surprised at some of the posts here. When your hooked into a fish big enough to need higher drag settings the low gear will let you get the fish in half the time and half the effort.
I agree that it isn't needed on a 50 or 100 lb fish but get into the 200+ class when you can and need to use higher drag settings the low speed lets the angler gain line on every lift and drop of the rod. When your fishing heavy drag with a high speed reel you need to drop the rod too fast to gain back the line because of the pressure from the fish, you just don't have the leverage to take back the line as well. I have had many lg tuna, sharks and swords that would have killed the angler (as they did before 2speeds were available)if they didn't have the option of going to a lower speed. In the past after the angler tires it would become a tug of war that usually the fish would win. After 2speed reels became available the angler would always be able to gain line back, even if it is a foot at a time it still was not a stale mate. With low gear if the fish isn't taking drag the angler is able to take line back. Just my opinion! |

2 speeds are the only way to go on big fish. When a big tuna or marlin (or sword in this case) is down deep and digging, drop it in low and crank. It's simple to crank in low and you don't even need to pump the rod. In a long fight it will certainly save your strength, then when the fish tires go back to high and lay it to em'.

When you pump the rod you need to be careful with the slack, especially if you are fishing all braid.
While in low you do not need to pump which keeps the tension more steady on the hook. Also these fish may stay down low and then decide to come up. The high gear comes in real handy so you can keep the tension when they do that. |
