mannyc:

If you have the money I would most certainly go with the 2 speed. There are times (many actually) that I leave mine in high speed throughout the fight, but when it's a drawn out battle it's nice to have that low speed to really keep him heading your way. I am glad I spent the extra $ but like most guys here will agree it's more about what you can afford.

Go for the two speeds. Great for a fish down deep with heavy drag and lot easier for the angler cranking in low gear. I have noticed anglers lasting 20 - 30 min longer than they would have just fighting in high gear before swiching off. Penn 70's have been working great for our sword and marling fishing.

I thought the penn 70's were single speeds.

The Penn 70VS is two-speed. It is one awesome reel. I love mine so far, haven't caught a fish on it yet though.

I have Penn VSII 50s and 80s. I hate the old internationals, but these are completely different reels. Go two speed, but 50 wide with backing is all you probably need. That probably means that an 80 may not be enough either on the fish of a lifetime. Keep big aussie snap swivels on your boat! You won't mind throwing a 50 over the side as much as an 80.
You will use the low gear!

I agree the Penn 70VS is a nice reel. I have used them several times on a friends boat. Always thought they were single speed. Guess I never relized they were 2 speed. Or never need to use it.

I personally like Shimano better than Penn. Just preference. That may cause some arguement or is probably a whole other thread in itself.
