I got a mongo squid the other night. It was over 22". I don't really see a lot of squid while out there, but when this thing slammed Glen's live finger mullet he had out for the possible random dolphin I was stoked. Glen was able to coax it over to the side if the boat and I dip netted it, and threw it in the live well. It was a funny seine. I thought some one was going to end up like this guy.
![]() I live rigged with a wax floss bridle through its mantle point, about 2 inches back so as not to damage any organs. I had never live rigged a squid, so I was just winging it, and hoped to keep it live. Basically rigging it like a live runner with floss. Then I sent it back down. It lived like a champion, and couldn't have looked any better. I dropped it down to 350" plus and after 30 min I brought it back up and it was perfect. Then night was over for us, weekday and we all to work in the morning. We had gone 2/2 both released pups, but Glen and Dave's first swordfish and the firsts for the boat. So I didn't get a swordy on the live squid, but if we had more time it would have worked. Here are a few pics. It is swimming perfectly, fully using its wings, and the tentacles were pulled in streamline then extend out, wild color changes. Very cool seine. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice sewing. Killer shots of it swimming after the rig job. Did you use the rigging needle or just make small incisions? Thanks for the cool report.

I'd like to have a well full of those & try an All live spread.
Very cool images & nice that you were able to keep him alive once rigged. (actually, it would have been even better if he went down the hatch.)

when fishing the canyons up north we almost always were able to catch squid and you cant get a better bait. The joke was that every one that came over the side was a tuna and most of the time it was the truth.
You dont need to floss them to the hook, just put the hook right through the meat where you had it and it should be fine, if a fish pulls on it flossed or not it will rip out. The good thing is they usually just inhale it. |

Its little wonder that baits have been disappearing as fast as they have for the last couple of months with beasties like that down there waiting for a snack.

Squids I've caught on sabikis when fishing for cigar minnows and herring have very often gone deep red (like in the second photo) just as soon as I dehooked them into the live well. They'd change back to their normal pale color within a second or two. Unfortunately, as was discussed earlier on a different thread, they always died on me. Now I know how to keep them though.

Hmmmm!
Maybe that is the reason why my dark red dyed baits work so well! Capt. Jim The BEAST |
