Ok this might be an obvious question but what is the 50 line, or as iv'e seen some places the 50/50 line?
I'm still getting my gear together, not going to happen this weekend but hopefully in two weeks I'll get out there. :?: |

Quick lesson:
50-line is what we call the w79.50 longitude line, which is about 12 nautical miles from the beach. This applies mostly to the area from Miami to Boynton. The number increases as you get closer to land (it's actually a negative number, -80.00 is near the beach. The negative is the distance west of the 00.00, which I think is Greenwich, England) 50/50 is the n25.50 and w79.50. I think that's off Hollywood, but I haven't fished that far south to know for sure. Fishing inside/outside is where we are in relation to the w79.50 line. |

With the exception of a couple of misplaced opinions, the information was very helpful.
As for the comment about somone not knowing what the 50 line is, tell you what, how about you choose to restrict your fishing to only what you have done in the past. Since you seem to be of the opinion that someone who doesn't know the particular vocabulary for a group of fishermen should restrict what they do. If I use your logic I shouldn't bother to try fishing in any different manner of location than that which I have fished before. Would that mean if you have never gone after tuna at the Shrimp boats out of key west you shouldn't try becasue you don't know the local jargon? |

It's called knowing your surroundings. Jargon is you are a kook. I feel really safe if you are running around in the dark not being able to figure out what the fifty line is. As far as your other coments, this is not scratch and sniff. If your thing is catching black fins in the shrimp fleet, you should know how to read your GPS. Sorry to sound negative but, what you are asking is as basic as turning the key. |

The 25.50 line would be south of Haulover Inlet. Somewhere in the vicinity of the blue and green diamonds. (condos on the beach) Haulover Inlet is approx. 25.54

QQ,
I'll bring you some backstrap out of this calf elk when I come down in a few weeks! Enjoying the elk but my sword steaks are gone. Fishalways, two things in the outdoor world that turns my crank... bugling a Trophy bull inside fifteen steps and having a sword blow up 10' from the boat when she feels pressure. As much as I enjoy them both, I want to come back from the hunt safe and sound. These guys just want a fella to be prepared before he heads out there in the wilderness. There was an article a while back by some experienced guys titled "It Can All Go Bad In A Minute". Would be a good Idea to look it up and read it before taking off out there without an experienced capn! You may have a lot of experience but your question sounds like a novice. Consider going with someone experienced and then with some time under your belt, go for it yourself maybe. Better to be cautious than dead RT |

Here's some advice for you. Get yourself a chart and get out there and do it. You don't have the shiny GOLD reels, don't worry about it, use what you have. You don't have a swordlight or fancy LPs, again, don't worry about it, use light sticks. You don't have a flyer or poon, ABSOLUTELY. don't worry about it, use a straight gaff, or just grab it and suplex it on the deck. OH, and if you prove me wrong on your first trip out (hook into a slob), well then you are one lucky S.O.B and you should call tek(jahmussa) to set you up with everything you need.
Good luck. |

Fishalways... several of these posters are folks of which I am honored to call "friends". They are not bashing you... it's more like hazing. Many of these guys have been attached to the sea for a long long time. Coordinates are second-nature. It would be to your benefit to learn as they have...
I've been doing this swording thing for about 10 months now. I fished near-shore with my head in the GPS chartplotter for a year prior. And to be honest, I did not know what the "50" was until I started swordfishing with some very generous individuals here on the forum. Ask questions. That's the best way you'll get your answers. Don't be offended by the vet'rans here... they may haze, but truly do not want to read about you missing at sea. Navigation at sea at night is a VERY important part of this sport we call swordfishing. So go ahead... ask EVERY question that you may have. Laugh at the goofy answers and take the serious answers to heart. We all consider your safety #1. And if you want proof... call for help on 72 on the sword grounds at 12am when you are in serious danger. You WILL be humbled at the response. I speak from experience. On a personal note... with about 40 trips under my belt in 10 months, I consider my swordfishing experience to be "limited". I truly love this sport. As a fellow enthusiast, I'll do my best to answer any question you may have. Ask on the forum, or send a PM. Good luck, and be safe... -->UB |
