I really like both. I like the Penn 70 VS'. The Tiagras I have are the new ones with the ratchet drag and new handles. They are solid and with a nice drag. The 70 is also a great reel ( the choice of RRosher) They have alot of line capacity(1000 yds of 50or 130#JBHC) but weigh about the same as the Tiagra 50.At the end of the day for me it comes down to angler ability, line capacity, drag and durability. can handle 80's and for myself may actually prefer them. Many who fish me me would not and certainly not at a heavy drag. I fish standup and don't want to fish 50#drag ongoingly. Unless you are heavy duty(Which means also possilbly losing out on the experience with the other 95% of the fish because you are overgunned..,
I would go with the 50W 2 speed Line capacity - with 130 or 80 braid you get 900 - 1200 yards of line on the 50 w. This matches the 80 with mono. And who would put much more than 1200 of line on an 80 even though it will take it. Drag - 80 provides more drag potential, but most of it comes above where you can use it. 25-35# is max for most folks in standup. Round up to say 40# max drag. Well a 50w will supply the maximum amount of usable drag So last is weight and durability - 80 is much heavier but will take heavy drag for a longer period of time. But 50w will handle the max drag with no problem, you may just service them more frequently. Edge to 50w as weight is very important in standup. Don't get me wrong, the 80 is a weapon and if you ever think to get a chair for marlin, shark and swords or get strong go for it. Folks get spooled for many reasons, but it is rare to hear a story on getting spooled on a 50 and the angler thought a 80 wouldn't have been spooled as well. We do get 80's spooled with experts on the boat. It will happen So maybe we should be talking 130!!! [/b] |
