I'm sure this has been debated, but my forum searches didn't turn up what I was looking for.
Due to our 60-90 mile run to the swordfishing grounds I only make 3 or 4 sword trips a year if lucky. So far in 2006 I've only made 2 trips. On both we just used glowsticks about 8ft away from our bait. I was thinking of using one of the battery powered lights on our next trip to see if it returned any different results. The ones I've seen cost anywhere between $35 and $65. If you guys only went 3 times a year would you feel it is worth the $ for one and if so what color would be the first you'd order. Thanks. |

3 times a year, probably not, but you would never have to worry about glow sticks again unless you use sticks on your jug/ballon/float baits.
I personally like the battery lights over the glow sticks, but both ways still catch fish. If I had to only pic one my favorites go as follows: 1. Disco 2. Mulit (Blue, Green, White) 3. Blue 4. Green

I wouldn't spend to much money on LP's if you only get out that much. But I would put your lightstick farther away from the bait. I like mine 20' away. I got some good fish with only a blue lightstick.

Great for psychadelic effect & fish don't seem to mind The Blue/Green / White is the "tribeam" where Blue, green & white are represented in one LP. What up Beerman, kinda got sick of the googans on the "other" site.

If I only took out one light... here's the color ranked for the top three...
Multi colored lights... 1. Disco 2. Disco 3. Disco Dual color... 1. Blue/White 2. Aqua/Purple Single color.... 1. Purple 2... pick your favorite. With only fishing as you do... I might save the money and stay with sticks but if you are only looking to buy one.... I'd go with Disco. -Tek |

I would have to vote for the same thing color wise as the above. I would have to just say get the Seamaster lights instead. They have four led lights as opposed to the two in the LP's. They also take four double A batts. THEIR LIGHT OUTPUT PUTS THE LP'S TO SHAME. I also like the design much better. You have to unscrew two screws to take the Seamasters apart. The screws also serve as the contact points and the light turns on only upon contact with saltwater.

Tek,
I have a couple seamaster lights and I just dont think they put out as much light as the LP. That said I really dont think it matters what light you use they all work. If the fish are around and they are hungry get ready for a rod to scream. just my humble opinion. I really think the lights and all the other extras are more for us than the fish. Bye the way TEK I need to place a large order of extras  |

I agree...don;t think it matters. I do like the disco though!!! Blue second. To answer the question though, Longliners seem to do fine with glowsticks!!! If you only do a few trips per yer, stick with the sticks!!! Try the LP duralumes blue/green sticks though. Put one about 10' away for the bait, then another 30' away.

Greg:
I tell you what .... even if you only get out swordfishing, say once a year,.. If you can make it more , more power to you. I think that you should have at least a set of 5-6 battery powered Electrolume lights. I happen to have the LP version and know that they can be turned on above water, on demand. (Think of it as Hurricane prepared-ness. )So, in the rest of the 360 days in the year, your can be Swordfish...party...Central. Hang up those lights on your next night time boat party, or create an exotic back yard ambience, to tell the stories, that you like to tell. There are many choices, some of which are beyond PG posting material, but yet below the ExxxTraceptional version either. If your budget allows, go for a few. Trust me, you will find uses for them. If not then PM me and I will provide some advanced knowledge. Go for the ones you believe in. I was partial to the LP EL Tri-color for a while, but you cannot be without the Disco either (many light color transitions). I have more colors too. Lately, I have heard about how much light, ie. lumens the Seamaster lights put out, which may make them an excellent choice for swordfishing, but I cannot say from first hand experience. ( I think that the manufacturer should send me a dozen or more and I will provide a fair evaluation in writing.). But if they don't work for your Disco BBQ party, you may just have to think about what your priorities are.... |

Alabar, you may want to check the batteries then. I assure you its an impossibility. Its only logical that 4 leds are going to be brighter that 2. Everyone whose seen these lights on my boat has been utterly amazed at the difference in brightness. Just as an example, I know that water clarity has a tendancy to vary, even on the grounds, but I can, for the most part, make out the seamaster light to a solid 150Ft straight under the boat.
