Thanks for the help guys! It sounds like I need to shorten up on my windon I have been runnning about 100' of mono. My first trip out last week I had a larger fish on for 1:50 min and pulled the hook about 50' under the boat. Reset and had a slash on a live hardtail. Seams like a bit of a learning curve here for me to work through.

Yes put the weight on about 50' from your bait. use a #64 rubberband... start out by passing the band through the loop on the weight and then back through itself so the weight is hanging from the loop.
then just twist that loop around the mainline, going up the line as you twist, twice and then send the weight through the loop. works great.

Ok.. gotta chime in here.
For those using windons... Don't put anything on the bridal as you are only asking for a windon failure. Don't be fooled into thinking that it's a better place to attach your lead. By putting your lead on the bridal where the mono is inside, you change the dynamics of the chinese finger cuff which is what is holding the mono inside. It's best to attach your lights/weights to the mono leader or above the bridal on the main line. We put our Electralume on the leader and the weight is 60 to 100 away from the bait. For those that must put "something" on the bridal, place "it" within the first 5 inches where the mono enters (near the Serve) as that area isn't part of the chinese finger cuff that is holding the mono. -Tek |

I always fish the lead on a heavy wax line hanger 100ft from my bait and the electralume on my leader but i don't use windons. If you have wind ons i suggest you put another wax line hanger about two feet up from your connection. As for the weight i like to use the plastic coated telephone wire about 12 inches long. This gets the lead away from the line and also gives you something to pull if the lead is not thrown off. Having the hangers on the line gives you an exact mark each time with no guessing. I would also use the hanger for the balloon or float that you use. The reason the lead is so far away is that it gives the fish a chance to eat the bait and not feel immediate tension wich will spook him and often cause the fish to be foul hooked. I fish this distance after trying it close and the hookup ratio to pulled hook ratio is awesome. You will hook more fish in the right spot and less foul hooked. I like to use the wax line 70lb and it is called tacky wax. It lasts a long time and if you double it it is even more durable.....Andy

On another note, to clear this up. I see so many times where someone marks their line with a captive wax loop and they still connect the long line clip to the main line within the loop vs clipping it to the wax loop.. I would suggest to always attach your gear to the wax loop vs the main line. Also, when you fish your lead 100ft from the bait... remember to space your jug rods out MORE than 100ft apart. This is especially needed when using live bait. You don't want your bait to get tangled up in the other lines ![]() FYI... I'm in Louisiana now and will be heading to Venice in the morning. I'll be fishing with Capt Scott Seaner and Bill Delabar of Frenzy Tackle for Swords and Tuna for two days. Capt Mike Ellis had to back out on our trip due to Charlene being induced on Monday. I guess it's ok under that circumstance and I wish them both the best of luck with their little girl Zoey ![]() I'll report in when I'm able to get back online. -Tek |
