I am wanting to try and use some of the Moldcraft glow squids and the new Williamson's on my next trip sword trip this weekend. Anyone care to share any ideas on rigging. My first thought would be o rig them just like a real squid.

Capt. Mike,
I rig the artificials just like they would be rigged for trolling. The Williamson has a plastic hook stop/lock built into it which is also the holographic eyes. It pops in and out of the body during rigging. The hook point is loacted in the lower head/tentacle area. I have tried the Boone Glow squids but to date, all fish have been taken on the Williamson Squid in pink color. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

I haven't had enough time on them yet to give you any real numbers but they do work. Right now I only use one artificial in a spread and it does get hit to include the big one I lost last month. One night with my daughter and her b/f we fished all artificial. We got 1 shark and 1 bump. I will continue trying them and hopefully the way the #'s are leaning I will be fishing all artificial, all the time.

Captain Mike,
When I fish for fun with family and friends I only use artificial, if that tells you anything. I tip the hook with a small chunk of bait squid for a bit of scent, just in case. When I take my charter customers, I fish mostly natural bait because they expect that and I am not quite confident enough yet to risk it on their dime. Know what I mean? Capt. Jim The BEAST |

If the artificials catch on up here then I wont be able to sell any of the squid I have. So I will keep it to only my fun trips also. Now if I can just get everyone's mind of of those damn yellowfin and obto a swordfish I will have it made.

To be honest with you, I hope to get some soak time on the artificials this Friday and Saturday night. If I find they work as well as they seem to I can cut bait costs, not to mention the mess of rigging.

Hey guys... we're preparing for the Finest Kind tourney this weekend. Not sure if we're gonna mess with the plastics this time, but I'd certainly like to hear more about it. Are you trolling 'em? ...or just drifting 'em in place of your natural baits?

Uncle Buck,
I am simply drifting them in place of a natural bait. I am going to try trolling some of the Boone Glow Squids that I have, but I haven't tried it yet. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

Nick C,
Nope, just single rigs! I'm not real keen on the idea of multiple baits with extra hooks swinging to beware of. I use little squids (4") and put the head or the mantle on the artificial squid hook. That way I have the scent and they remain intact even if slashed. One of mine has had a shark on it and 2 Swordfish. It's cut up a bit but still fishable. After I'm sure they will take this offering with regularity, I will address the issue of artificial, sweetened or unsweetened. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

Nick C,
No offense to you guys that are selling natural squid! I'm not trying to ruin y'alls business. Only answering questions. I just prefer artificial whenever possible. No fuss, no mess, less time! I have quit pulling natural ballyhoo on a troll for Dolphin too. If I find an artificial that works as well or better, I run it! I still keep dead ballyhoo for baiting up Dolphin under birds just like I still keep natural squid to bait up that big'un lurking in my lights. Capt. Jim The BEAST |
