Default To sharpen or not

I have a Poon harpoon and was wondering if I need to sharpen the bronze dart or just leave it unsharpened. All thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Take it to a machine shop and have them sharpen it on the wheel... it will pierce swordies and makos with ease

I currently use a bronze dart, sharpened on a wheel, A while back some one recommended a stainless steel dart. I might give it a try, though the bronze dart (sharpened) seems to work fine for me.

Mike; you and I have never meet, but we trolled the same waters Andros/Fresh creek I lived/worked their for a number of years and had a Little place on the creek till they leveled it to rebuild the new yacht club.

I hope in the near future to hook with you and pull on some YFT and possible some sword, Cajun style

Fresh Creek did have some good fishing but it doesn't hold a candle to Venice. The decision to move to La. was one of my best ever. Speaking of tuna I had 15 last night. I am fishing for swords again on tuesday. I will post my report when I get him.

Stainless or Bronze, doesnt make a difference- as long as it is SHARP.

Ok I will say this give me the dullest dart you have and it will go in and out like butter on a sword.I do not sharpen a dart because when in a fish a sharp dart will keep cutting and I have seen them pull out of swords  If you ask any commercial harpoon guy they will tell you just the first 1/2 in ever gets sharpened. These guys make a living harpooning fish.

I agree with Quack.

I don't sharpen mine. The flesh is so soft that they go through a Sword like butter. IMHO.

Not to jump on the band wagon but I don't sharpen mine either. We have never had a problem. They do look pretty though, all shined up. O

If you encounter a mako and want to stick it, I say keep it sharp. Swords are no problem. A good shot will go right through the gill plates.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I will maybe just sharpen the first 1/2" of the dart.
