Aftco makes a Stor a Butt which you can disconnect the reel seat from the butt and change from long to short or bent to straight. I am in the process of buying a set of rods now and I am going to go whith this setup. That way I can change from bent to straight when I go Wahoo trolling or Marlin trolling. I have caught fish on the short bent butts stand up style, although it was a bit akward. As for short or long I would stay with the short butts, much more comfortable for stand up fishing. Also theres nothing wrong whith cranking out of the rod holder  the bent butts are better for that.

Okay, I'm going to stir up the sh!t here, but here goes.
I just don't know why so many people fight the fish out of the rodholder. It takes all the fun out of it. You can't feel the fish, you can't play the fish, no pump and reel, just reel. Where is the fun. ![]() (There is still plenty of fun, just not as much as when stand-up fighting) Simmer down, I am all for it, if it is a monster and you reelly have to put the heat on her, or if the seas are nasty, or if you are just getting started, Or if it is a tournament and you have $ on the line, but to reelly feel and enjoy the power of these fish I recomend you stand-up fight them. Even in a chair you get to pump & reel, so you can feel the fish, but the rodholder.....no fun to me, just work. The rodholder works great just not as much fun, and I'm more about having fun catching these fish. The charter guys, and the guys doing it for a living, I understand why many of them do it, because they need to put fish on the deck, it's their living. There is less pilot error out of the rodholder. This is only an opinion, mine. Many will disagree. Catching these fish in any fashon is a boat load of fun.

NF: You are 100% right stand up is much more fun and better than the rod holder. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Nightfighter I also agree that it is more fun to fight stand up. I personally pick up the rod and do battle. But there have been times that I have cranked from the holder for a good portion of the fight for various reasons, for example rough weather or if I have already caught a fish that night. but before that fish comes to the boat I will pick up the rod.
but for the purpose of this thread what style butt do you perfer? |

I have found that they don't fit well in some rod holders. Seems they are slightly to short, and don't lock all the way down, when inserted. Hits the bend in the butt before locking all the way in. They work fine in about 90% of the boats I work on. Make sure you purchase, or make up some safety lines, but the short bent butts are the way to go. IMO

Just so you know, Aftco has corrected that problem with the short bent butts, they are now making them about 2 inches longer so they will lock into almost every rod holder, except on some big sportfishers that have the deep holders. You probably have the old style if they dont lock in......just thought you would like to know........
I second the "stor-butt" ....... thats what every one of my rods has on them, that way I can fish bent butts or stright butts whenever I want, but they get pricey that is for sure

While we are on the topic of butt style.I have a black majic belt and lower back harness, I also have the braid drop down belts, but I ussually use the black majic harness with the braid belts. I have used the short straight and the short bent butts with the black majic belts, it took some getting used to, but I was able to put a hurting on those fish! (with the short bent that is)
What style and make fighting belt do you all perfer, with what butt style? |

just thought i would throw in that when i build my rods i used short bent storabutts and bought extra straight butts. the short ones fit in the 10inch deep rod holders. the storabutts are awesome, i change them out all the time depeneding on what im doing. Also, i use a Braid Stealth Harness with Brute Buster belt plate and i LOVE it
Ex, in the bahamas we would go from trolling for tuna to marlin to wahoo every day. Throw on the bent with some cedar plugs, then straight butt and some marlin lures, back to bent for some high speed, its awesome! but make SURE you use safety straps!!! the bents have a tendency to fly out of the holder if you are high speed trolling or a big fish hits, even if they are locked in. happened to me over spring break, i watched in horror as the $1G+ rig suspended itself between the trolling weight and the safety rope at 15 knots!  |

If you have the old style Aftco bent butts and they don't lock down all the way (like myself), you can buy extenders that drop down in the holder.

I hate to stir the pot to a perfect thread but this is an area I have a bit of experience. Yes I've been fishing the Aftco ub2 unibutt since 1998 and yes I've had a Shimano 80 wide come out of the rod holder in the fighting chair and slam the transon.......had I not had it tied to a strong rope I would of lost about $2500.00 worth of gear that day. The new Aftco ub2 "special" is the 2" longer rod butt that hits the bottom of every holder I've set it in. You can buy these from a couple of different places for about $125.00 - $140.00 one supplier I've purchased them from is Biscayne Rod Mfg. located in Hialeah Fl. Contact Eddie Carman at 305-884-0808. I've done quite a bit of research on this subject......most of the Aftco dealers don't even know the difference between the two butts. I will tell you one disadvantage of the 2" longer butt.....in that it changes the fulcrum point and puts the advantage to the fish....I found this out the hard way with a Australian Black Marlin in the 900 lb. range. Give me a Ian Miller Short Stroker 37kg rod with a Shimano 80 Wide, a Standard Aftco ub2 short bent butt, a Smitty's butt worn harness and I'll do battle with most any Sword in Fl waters or 1000 lb OZ Black......This is my kind of fishing....may the strongest survive.... my ass tied to the fighting chair with a saftey rope....or the monster at the end of the rod with 65lbs of drag...bring em on........I'm still trying to pop that "Grander" on stand up, and I don't have many good years left.....my.02
