Default hand gear?

it has come to my attention the last few times i have been out that i have seen gear with blinking lights on them it is legal with a permit i think u can have 2 baits on each one of these blinking buoys with as many buoys as u can handle i think??? im just wondering what the public opinion is on this matter. is this just a way of getting arould so called long lineing?? where does it end?? how many boats are alould to do this?? is this going to deminish the sword population we are fighting so hard to protect??

Yes its very legal!!! 2 baits on each line is correct, the best of the best say NO more than 15-18 bouys is what is manageable, although many fish way more, and there was a proposed law to limit it to 30 (way too many to effectively watch I am told). No its not a way around longlining, in fact its way more conservation minded, meaning, most bycatch and small fish can be released unharmed and even tagged if the fisherman cares. It ends by not letting the longliners get back in here, these handline guys help towards our annual quota, whether you like it or not, its way better than longlines, although there are the few bouy guys that dont care about anything. Not sure the exact # of boats doing it, but only a handful have the proper license to SELL legally to the market. No this is not going to effect the fishery hardly at all....does not even compare to a LONGLINE!!

permits cost what ever the guy selling it can get for it.
there is no more from nmfs, you have to buy someone out
as for how many fish it depends on the type of permit, directed permits can take whatever they can catch/carry..
