As bouncer said at the seminar you should put a mighty or small light six feet from the bait and a lp at the junction of the leader up to 30 feet away. Pumpikin eater says strobe is the way.

If you don't mind keeping your crimper out and using a new crimp each time I have a very easy way to rig squid.
1. Cut your leader at an angle so the end is pointed and sharp 2. For placement purposes lay your hook against the squid so when the eye is at the point of the mantle you can see where the bend of the hook will be. 3. Where the bend lays simply make a small incision in the squid with a sharp knife 4. Insert the hook (eye first - no leader connected to it) into the slit you cut and push the hook eye to the tip of the mantle. 5. Place a crimp on your leader and and push it through the squid and eye of the hook. 6. Crimp the leader with the crimp right at the tip of the mantle. The squid will flutter beautifully when you drift and the hook is very well secured in the squid as well as being exposed for a good hook-up. Of course if the sword chooses to slash the bait, and you get half a squid back, then there isn't much you can do. I like to think the slashed baits are from the smaller fish that we don't want anyway. A big hungry fish can eat these small squid with no problem. I have had small fish (barely legal) swallow 3-4 pound mackeral when day dropping so big baits don't scare them off. |

Its a lot easier to buy them from Big Game Baits than going through all that Bull crap. Besides there hasn't been a day I haven't gone out and that DL's baits haven't gotten hit. I don't like to waste time I like to fish.

I know Luis has great baits but for some of us rigging our own baits is actually part of the catch and is fun. I was just explaining a way that I find to be easy and effective.

Rigging maybe fun for some people who only have time. I barely have time to sleep so when it comes to fishing I have very little time so I need all the time I can get on the water when I do go. Why waste my time rigging a bait when i can buy a great bait that cannot be rigged any better. I guess I'm not cheap
or I just don't have time for that part of the fun.

Hey everyone I'm a newbie at Sword Fishing. Although I had success on my first trip with 1 landed, two hook ups one of which was lost at the boat, I'm eager to try other ways on rigging squid.
Has anyone tried the Bouncer method where he places the hook through the center of the mantle and sews the eye of the hook to the top of the mantle? Seems very easy to do and alot less work! He states in his DVD that it has worked best for him with better hook ups Thanks! |

That's the way I rig all my baits! hook in the center is good. I also rig hook out the beak, not thru the head, more expose hook this way for better hook-up Hope this help you out brother. If I tell you anymore secrets I would have to.............

Been fishing in panama a few times, no luck yet with swords, but I did come up with a fast way to rig squid.
1 Pre make a wire trace on a 11/0 J (I like mustads but WMMV). Dont finish off the end with a crimp+eye yet. I use 18" of heavy 49-wire cable. 2 When you have your squid, run the hook through the vent and out the mouth. Then take the end of the cable and run it under the mantle and through the tip. If we dont secure it some way, the squid will crumple. 3 Stretch the squid out against the trace. Where the squid ends, mark that spot on the trace. Then take a regular long sewing needle, thread it with rigging floss, pick apart a strand in the cable at the mark and run it through. Then run the needle through the squids fin, next to the body at the same area the trace comes out. Cross the body and run the needle through on the other fin, same area. Then tie two overhand knots in the rigging floss. This will hold the squid against the trace, and the twisted wire will prevent the rigging floss from slipping like it tends to do on mono. 4 Crimp an eye on the end of the cable around a swivel to the mono leader. I dont see the point of being able to rig a squid fast. You have plenty of time to make rigged squids at home or on the way out. If one gets busted up just switch it out with a fresh rigged one. The cable prevents bite-off from sharks, and since its not too longer than the squid the tuna dont seem to mind either. Last edited by the codfather; Today at 02:16 PM.. |
