i've been checking out this site and can't make heads or tails of the reels and capacities. i'm wanting to get a reel for swordfish but can't figure which one has the huge capacity you guys keep talking about. Also, do all 50's & 80's, etc. have pretty much the same capacity regardless of manufacturer. Mainly interested in accurate, Avet. plan on JB hollow. many thanks from an ignorant wannabe swordman.

You can pass on the Accurates. Overpriced IMHO. Tiagras work just fine and the price is right. Avets have really smooth drags and you can put a lot of heat on 'em.

For day-dropping, I'd recommend 80's. If you're doing night drifts, 50's are fine, and I know people that use 30's. They've also got some stories about getting worked, but they still use 'em. Yeah, 100 JB or the momoi is pretty good too.

I am far from an expert and new to the game but I have been experimenting with reels and lines for two summers now. Hand crank, daytime dropping only. Not long ago I was asking the same questions you are. Heres what I came up with.
My goal was to figure out the smallest most managable set up that would work. I have 50W Shimanos and bought a 30W to try this year. I also built a stand-up rod just for the 30 that is working very good thus far. The 30WLRS reel is working out fine for me. Holds 1200 yds of 80 lb high vis yellow SpiderWire braid (which tests at over 100 and you can see it in the water to keep your line straight up and down) The best part is that you can actually hold this outfit and move around the boat while fighting your fish. The 50 works good too. Holds 1200 of 100 lb braid. It would probably be the best one to have in your hands when you get the real monster on. That being said, we have caught several fish over 200 recently on the 30W however without issues. Personally I cant imagine trying to stand up fish with an 80. Hope this helps narrow your search. My two cents anyway...

Nothing less than 80# on my reels, but we fish all Tiagra 50's & 80's for night drifting and 80's when we do daydrops. I can see the fun in using 30's on smaller fish at night (which we do see a lot of around here), but WHEN you do finally hook that BIG fish, I'm not confident that a 30 would be enough to get the job done. I'm not an expert by any means, but would not recommend fishing a 30 for daydropping. Just my .02, to each his own

fishing for swords at night I use 12-15 lbs of drag... how much drag do you use day timing??? 20?? 30??? isn't 65 enough for that??? I just don't don't get the 100lb braid for 20 lbs drag.... 5 to 1 ratio seams overkill...

Im with you, i use a 4-1 ratio on my breaking strength to drag ratio...however i think what DL suggest is having the heavier line so if you need to go to full drag the main line wont be the limiting factor. d-a

joe,
I think if you daytime in no current like in keys you may get away with 65, as long as it is a rat, You get a #250 and the surge from it's runs will snap your line right at the rod. I have a tiagra 80 loaded with #80 braid and have landed a few good fish no problems, it also is a good idea to have the more drag from the 80 if you get a donkey on there or you may fight it for days. the bite will be coming on strong next week , get ready
