has anyone tried tucking the hook entirely inside the squid? I was watching the new sword show on discovery and they demonstrated how the longliners do it....the hook is tucked inside the mantle of the squid (point and all). just curious

Never tried it. But not all of 'em do it like that. In fact, that's the first time I've seen that particular rigging style. Also gotta remember that the fish can pick up the bait and swim around for a while, giving some time for the circle hook to work its way into the jaw. If we rigged that for rod-n-reel, the bait would most likely pull out of their mouth before the hook could grab.

I have had the best hook-up ratios with the owner 9/0 offshore bait hook tucked inside the squid. I have used probablly every way to rig squid possible with all different size and style hooks and this has been the best for me. It is a fast and easy way and it works.

Remember drifting in the current hanging from a long line is a whole different deal than your bait getting dragged and having a weight on the line as we fish while drifting at night.
With any bait that is soft, such as a squid, rigging with the hook entirely hidden in the bait works well as once you go to hook the fish the hook immediately tears though the bait and penetrates the fish. When we chunk tuna using tuna chunks for bait (yes on the San Diego long range trips we chunk up tuna for bait and chum that are larger than we prize on our coast) you bury a 9/0 circle hook completely inside of a tuna chunk so all that is exposed is the fluro leader. The fish inhales the bait and once running with it you slide the lever drag to strike and never miss a fish. Every single one is hooked, as it is supposed to be, in the corner of the mouth. It was the best bite to hook-up, and catch, ratio I've ever seen. Harry |

If the swords are hungry it does not matter they will chewit up and swallow . you need to know when to feed them and when to lock it up. I pretty much think they will eat just about anything you put down there from strips to whole fish squid, belly's etc. This long line show is only showing you what they want you to see and 5 fish in a thousand hooks makes the close truth to how hard it really is.

if your hook is tucked in.... I think you would diminish your chances of foul hooking the fish. Which I think we can all agree at least 50% or more of the fish are foul hooked. I VOTE LEAVE THE HOOK EXPOSED!!!!!!!!!!

I dont tuck my shirt in and sure as hell wont tuck my hooks in. If I could use five hooks exposed and sleep at night I would. Iriesoul sed it right a good percentage of get foul hooked and the hooks exposed increase thar percentage.
