I always employ my Penn downriggers when trolling and have used wire cable until now. I just noticed that the cable on one of my downriggers needs to be replaced and was considering using Spectra type braid instead. Has anyone done this and with what pound test Spectra? How long does it last and are there any disadvantages over cable? What knot do you tie the relase clip on with? Might do one first and see how I like it before I commit to replacng the cable on both.
Thanks in advance for any responses. Richard

We switched to 130# Jerry Brown hollowcore a few years ago and never looked back. We go with a spliced end loop to connect the BB swivel with a Offshore Swivel knot.

Yes... no cable hummmmm with spectra.
Instead of taking the cable off, we typically crimp a swivel to the end of the cable and attach 100 to 300 yards of 130# JBHC on top. A nice benefit to using spectra is that if your fish runs forward and wraps the mono on the spectra, the mono will cut the spectra allowing you to still catch that fish. Where cable will cut the mono and you'll only wonder about how big that fish was instead of weighing her in. -Tek |

This is what we have been using for a while. Seems to get a little deeper than cable (less drag) with no hum and no fraying ends to catch your fingers! All we used was a doubled line uni knot and it has held up well. We used 200lb on our downriggers.
American Fishing Wire RB200GR-450FT Downrigger Braid AFW's Downrigger Braid offers high strength with minimum diameter and is 100% Spectra Braid. AFW's Downrigger Braid is tough and abrasion resistant. This Downrigger Braid will also help eliminate trolling hum. American Fishing Wire RB200GR-450FT Downrigger Braid |
