Pulling hooks can be from a few things. First thing is probably from too much drag. Even if you only have 12-14 pounds of drag on the fish it's important to remember that as your line goes out further your drag pressure is increased without you touching the settings. You may think you have only 14lbs on the fish into the fight when in reality you have 20.

You should try keeping your weight 40-60 ft from your bait. The more time the fish doesn't feel any resistance while eating your bait the better. You want to make sure you don't push the drag lever forward to get tight on the fish prematurely. Let the fish run 3-5 seconds and ease the drag forward. This helps in getting a good hook set.

Make sure your hook(s) are very sharp. Usually a smaller hook will not get as solid a hook up and will pull easier. What size hook(s) are you using?

One more thing to check is that you are not rigging your squid so that the hard part of the head is filling the j area in the hook. This looks nice on a squid but it will cause you to have many poor hook sets, losing fish via pulled hooks.

It is still summer and while there are a good number of bigger fish being caught there are still a lot of rats. These rats are hard to get a good hook set in because they have small mouths and they are sloppy eaters. Hope this helps.

What you haven't said is, are your pulled hooks on live baits or squids?

We fish very differently with either bait as far as initial drag, hook set, style of hook.

You have to expect high ratio of pulled hooks on live baits, but if you are pulling a lot of hooks with squid baits, you need to change your rig or how you set the hook. We lock em down with squid, but fish them real light with live baits.

As far as ultimate drag setting, those fish can handle anything you can give them without breaking the line. How hard do you think the bouy guys pull on them and they regularly catch fish at least as big as the one posted lately. A solidly set squid bait with a good hook, probably can't be pulled with the drag on an 80 without breaking the line.

Ron only a few weeks ago you posted here telling me the buoy guys weren't catching enough fish to pay for their beer money. So which is it? Are they regularly catching fish as big as the one posted lately like you say today or are you just talking out of your ass again?

Default Commercial Guy

The commercial guy uses bouys with 65#s of pull , He has caught 7 keeper fish since February . These are the facts from his mouth. I dont know how many sets he's done whether he's out there every night or just once in awhile. He is very friendly and eager to explain how it works going so far as to invite you to "come by and check it out" if you wish.
On another note...
Im having a problem with the fish weight , Im reasonably new at this (7 fish now in 9 trips) but am finding large discrepencies in the fish weights. I just caught a 51' and using a farmers scale it weighed exactly 54 pounds. Repeated weighings at the dock are coming up short of the "guestimated" weights up to almost 48% !! My question ...Is everyone using a scale to measure these fish ? I've had one guy exclaiming " 100POUND MONSTER" and upon weighing it was exactly 53 lbs. Is there a accurate measurement of inches = pounds ? I need to find a inches = pounds calculation that equals actual scale weight. Anyone know one I can test ? It's a pain having to hook up the scale and lift the fish each time to find my guestimated 85 lber only weighs 50 lbs. Thanks , Randy
