I just bought a Electramate 920 XP with a Penn 9.0. I went throught the Electramate and it is great. I would like to service/upgrade the Penn. Who does the best service on this reel. Are there recommended hop ups for use with Electramates?

This is the response from Electramate
The weak link is the brass gear sleeve in the Penn Reel. Penn Reels are great reels but you have to understand that they were designed for hand cranking. But, even when used for hand cranking, the gear sleeve eventually wears out. Therefore, in order to benefit the fisherman, we started manufacturing a stainless steel gear sleeve for all Penn Senator Reels in sizes 6/0 through 14/0. It is a relatively easy task to replace this gear sleeve but for most people, we recommend that they take their reel to a tackle store with a repair department and let them replace the gear sleeve. Part No. 98-114SS $25.00 plus UPS |

There right about that brass gear. I have broken a few with my 9/0 920 xp but i love that rig caught a lot of groupers on the reef and wahoos!and it will last a long time before it snaps. The motor will start to move back and forth thats your warning it's ready to brake.
Cheers,DL

I kept a large supply of pinion and main gears for my 4/0 and 6/0 reels on my charter boat. I'd probably go through a pair of gears a week.
A word from experience: When one gear gets worn and grinds, DON'T JUST CHANGE ONE GEAR. CHANGE THEM BOTH! When one gets chewed up, it chews on the other. If you just change the more-chewed gear, when you put it back together the old, less-chewed gear will tear the new gear to pieces quickly. Then you'll be swapping both gears out for a total of 3 gears, rather than 2, and twice as much jacking with reels on the dining room table. |
