I understand the question and have been told that j hooks should be offset. They seem to not be readily availble in most tackle shops. Most of the j hook do not come offset. I suppose that they turn in the fishes mouth when chomp down on. I've been using standard J hooks with no offset and haven't had any hook up problems. I am also curious about offset hooks and hook up ratios. Alway look for more info that might help!

a 9/0 - 10/0 offset j-hook is my favorite. An offset hook on a dead bait such as squid has been extremely effective in good hooksets for me...

Good Luck

We started out using the offset Lindgren hook. They may work great on squid however of the 12 fish we have caught in Jamaica only one has eaten a squid. All the rest have been caught on mackerel. One problem with the Lindgren hook was that it kept fouling into the body of the bait resulting in a 3 or 4 missed fish. I switched out to a 11/0 short shank marlin lure type hook with the widest gap I could find. have not missed a strike in the last 5 fish. Those wide hooks are getting a great bite into the mouth of the sword and staying put. We also rig the hook completely outside the bait. Recently we have been bridle rigging the bait through the eye sockets. Before we were just sewing the hook between the anal fin and the tail outside the bait. Just sewing it alongside the bottom edge of the fish. My .02 worth

Default Escolar, the other white bait fish

Ya Jerry:

Then next time you catch a small escolar, you won''t have to worry about handing them off at the dock anymore: you can rig up a swordie Yum Yum. Hmmm, I just wonder if you rig up a 15 lb. escolar with a double rig, if you may just lock into a 350 lb. swordfish?

Great advice Jerry. I agree with the foul hooking on with the 9/0 LP's.
