Hi,
Trying to choose between the two reels as they are in similar price brackets and pretty similar reels in terms of line capacity and max drag settings. I want to use the reel for targetting Albacore and bluefin up to around 60lbs, the only thing that worries me about the TLD is that I saw a TLD-25 and didnt like the plastic cog that the drag lever ratchets up as it's like a metal pin and the one I was looking at in a shop and it had signs of the plastic cogs getting damaged. Is this normal, and does the 30IIA use the same system? I prefer that the Tyrnos has aluminium reinforced sideplates and I'm hoping that for the size of fish mentioned above, I'm hoping the 5.0:1 gear ratio shouldnt be a problem. The advantage of the TLD is that it's a two speed. Any advice in deciding between the two?

If you have the money, consider the Avet reel in that size class. Its a little bit more money but its built like a bull and the drags have unreal power. Its made from machined aluminum, not cast like the Tyrnos, and it actually feels a little lighter.

I have both and would have to say the Tyrnos (two speed) is MUCH better. I will be dumping my TLD 25's later this year and switching over to the Tyrnos 20's because they are much smother and feel 1000 times more durable. The ratcheting drag lever is a big plus also.

Make sure that you get a new Tyrnos:
Contact info: Brian Nolte/Shimano National Service Manager - 949/470-4162 SHIMANO UNCOVERS PREMATURE WEAR ON SELECT TYRNOS 2-SPEED REELS - REPLACEMENT PROGRAM IN PLACE IRVINE, Calif. 8/22/06 -- Through its on-going quality control process, Shimano has discovered a possible manufacturing flaw with a limited number of Tyrnos 2-Speed reels, announces Brian Nolte, Shimano’s national service manager. “The problem is that a sharp edge on the pinion gear can cause premature wear on the anti-reverse pawls resulting in an anti-reverse failure,” said Nolte. “This only occurs if the reel is turned at high speeds - such as when line is put on with a winding machine. This premature war situation was found on a limited number of reels within three different production codes.” Nolte notes that Shimano was able to catch this issue very quickly and has already replaced its inventory with corrected product. All shipments of the Tyrnos 20II and 20II two-speed reels to dealers after July 1 do not have this possible problem. However, a small number of reels did go to market prior to discovery that may have this flaw. “In order to ensure excellent performance and durability that Tyrnos two-speed reel are capable of, we are requesting that dealers and anglers return any TYR20II or TYR30II reel with the production codes of DJ, DK and DL,” Nolte said. “The production code can be found on a small sticker on the bottom of the reel. Only the first two letters of the sticker are important - for example, a sticker that reads DL-P, means production code DL.” If your reel(s) do not have DJ, DK or DL as the first two letters of the production code, then the reel does not have the possible flaw and is not covered under this replacement program. In addition, if the reel does have DJ, DK or DL sticker on the bottom of the reel foot, but has a second sticker that says “R”, then your reel does not have the flawed pinion gear and does not fall under this replacement program. To remedy the situation, Shimano will replace the returned reel at no charge with a brand new reel and will pay the shipping both directions, notes Nolte. If your reel has been used, and the sticker has worn off or disappeared, Shimano’s customer service staff PRESS RELEASE will be happy to inspect your reel, and if necessary, replace the pinion gear at no charge, he adds. Tackle dealers can call their Shimano Call Trade Services toll free at 800/274- 4626 for further detail and to request a return authorization (RA) number. Dealers are asked to return their entire Tyrnos two-speed inventory with the affected production code letters with the RA number clearly written on the package and copy of the shipping invoice inside. Any angler who has purchased a Tyrnos 20II or 30II are asked to call Shimano’s customer service department toll-free at 877/577-0600. They will be sent a prepaid Federal Express shipping label to return the reel. A brand new reel will be sent to them promptly. ### Dealer returns: 800/274-4626 to request a Return Authorization Number (Return the affected Tyrnos II reels with the provided RA clearly written on the package and a copy of the shipping invoice inside) Angler/consumer returns: 877/577-0600 (Shimano’s customer service with send a prepaid FedEx shipping label to return any affected for replacement at no charge) Shimano - Cycling, Fishing, Snowboarding |

Looks like the Tyrnos 30 2 Speed for what it offers and the price I think it should be a good fit.
Thanks for the advice

The problem with TLD's isn't the drag lever failing, it's the reel seat breaking-the-eff-off. Junior had it happen on a 50, as did I. His with a sword, mine with a blue marlin.

The new Shimanos have an improved reel seat but it still is not metal. they also have better handles and a stronger drag. They will catch big fish but they will also fail occaisionally. Tracy Melton told me that he felt it was when a stand up angler pulled on the reel with his hands while fishing big drag. How did it happen with your reels boboe?
