Lever drags are seen on most large offshore reels (see: Penn International and Shimano Tiagra for good examples). It is not a cheaper alternative to a star drag system. What I like best about lever drags is that I can tell exactly where the drag is set by sight. I can pre-test my drag when at the dock and know how much pressure I have at different settings. That's pretty hard to do with a star drag.

Simply, a lever drag allows you to steadily change the drag between freespool and strike and then up to maximum drag. Lever drag reels tend to be a good bit more expensive than star drag and, for almost every situation, I would take a good lever drag reel over a good star drag reel. It gives you more options and there is much less worry of backlash...

Additionally to the well said posts, lever drag offers more drag control when fighting a big fish. it is easier to accurately back off as opposed to the star drag which is very easily over compensated. it is my experience that the lever also offers a smother drag but a poorly done lever drag has rough spots as does the star system. not all levers are equal an i suggest you explore various opinoins on reels prior to buying. we have fished internationals for years and have just switched out for avets. the primary reason was the smooth drag. avets are even smoother than the rebuilt after market system that we mdified the international with.
