Its time for me to re-spool. . .
Currently I am using Gudebrod 80# dacron on my (2)50's, (2)50W's, and (3)80w's. From there, I splice in a 150# mono topshot. Jerry Brown is way too costly to spool up all of these reels. Im definetly into the braid/mono combo. Go back to the Gudebrod or switch over to something else? |

I bit the bullet, and went w/ the braid. The gudebrod has worked well for me in the past, and I still have it on the wire-lined trolling outfits as backing.

I use the Cortland 80lb his-vis for backing on my 50w's and am very pleased with it -- can get 450 yds of dacron and then a 100yd top shot of 150 mono when I pack it down tight with a commercial line winder.
One trick I just picked up this season is taking a sharpie and marking every 100 yds of the dacron as I put it on -- that way if you think your getting spooled, you can tell exactly how much line you have left on the reel. Last edited by big jay; 11-21-2007 at 10:23 AM.. Reason: typo |

Dacron will need to be replaced from time to time where hollow spectra will last forever. And if the working end needs to be replaced, you simply replace what you need. Or if you get a bad spot somewhere from the end, you can just do a knotless line splice.
Hollow spectra is costly up front but it lasts a long long long time. You can figure breaking even on the cost as compared to spooling with mono about about the 4th time you would have respooled your reels. So while it's expensive now, it will save you money in the long run. If you plan on giving up fishing in the next year and line capacity isn't an issue, there's no need to buy spectra. We tested the Momoi line and it's slightly higher in price than the Jerry Brown. It only comes in Blue and is a quality product. If you are backing the 50s and 80's, I would go with the 130# hollowcore as it's the best price. Jerry and Momoi are both 12 carrier lines in the 130# size while both companies go to 16 carrier for the 80# and that gets expensive real quick. Not to mention you don't need that much line on an 80W ![]() -Tek |

DaveB- I do like JB, however I just cant seem to justify $400 - $500 or more on line. Gudebrod & Cortlandt are reliable and economical- I have to spool up (3) 80w's & (2) 50w's |
