Just returned from a fabulous week of fishing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Went down with three buddies and fished 5 of 6 days there.

Day 1. Went off shore looking for yellow fin tuna but didnt find any,then ran up to "Golden Gate" a sea mount 26 miles north west of Cabo. We fished a 33ft Pochos, a fly bridge day boat-very fast and maneuverable.
Caught 2 gaffer dolphin early then we trolled ballyhoo that I brought and raised a striped marlin. He popped off so we set up and jigged tinker mackeral and live baited for stripers. It was sick-The fishing was fast and furious. The marlin would ball up the bait then every boat would run over when the birds swarmed. We could see stripers everywhere that we looked devouring tinkers and we would throw our baits into the ball and get bit. Boats were everywhere and when the marlin came to the surface they would all rush to be the first to get there and throw the live baits. There were boats hooked up everywhere and we had a hooked marlin jump twice and slam into the side of our boat, narrowly missing me in the cock pit. I wish mere words could convey just how exciting and dynamic this fishing was. We fished with circle hooks and hooked eight, catching five.

Day 2 We decided to try the Sea of Cortez as we heard rumors that there were large tuna 10 miles north of the Gordo Banks. We had reservations for the best sushi restaurant in Cabo and if you bring the loins, they go wild with the dishes,making wave after wave of incredible and original sushi and sashimi presentations. We bought thousands of sardines from a panga fisherman and ran about 35 miles north but we couldnt raise the tuna. We went back to the Gordo banks and live chummed there and had the tuna up but couldnt get them to eat despite fishingtiny hools on light line with no leader. We trolled back south with big marlin lures and ran into a school of porpoise. Knowing that the tuna swim with them we put out the cedar plugs and caught 4 football yellowfins and they were fine eating that night.

Day 3 We rested and had fish tacos poolside with the mahi we caught Monday afternoon.

Day 4 Trolled cedar plugs on the way up to Golden Gate and caught two nice dolphin. Then went and live baited stripers and caught 2 more, one that we estimated at 230 lbs. The other striper hit the sabiki bait jig and got entangled and I fished him with the bait rod with 20 lb test line for 45 mins before we got him close enough to leader him and pop him off. We were following him around the ocean with a tinker still in the rig and lashed to the side of his head bringing memories of Ahab and Moby Dick.

Day 5 We went back to Golden gate . On the way we stopped and caught 10 gaffer dolphin up to 35 lbs. There were a million boats fishing around a huge submerged tree stump. Everybody was catching trophys. We used all our live bait then threw out ballyhoo. Then we went up to Golden Gate and caught five more Stripers.

Day 6 We definitely saved the best for last. We trolled cedar plugs inside of the Golden Gate and caught a nice dolphin. Then the captain got a call and we went busting offshore and found the porpoise and yellowfins. We trolled cedar plugs and pulled 9 nice football tuna out of the school. Now we had a dolphin and 9 tuna and decided to go for marlin. We went live baiting tinkers over the sea mount at Golden Gate. We had two double header hook ups and one tripple header. The fish were busting and balling up the bait something fierce. Boats were flying and hooked up all over. At the end of the day we had seven striped marlin releases.

Total for the trip: 19 striper releases, 14 Dorado, 13 football yellowfin, a lot of laughs and a ton of life long memories.

You are living the la vida loca.

I have never been to Cabo San Lucas, but it is on the wish list. Now you are making it out to be a fantastic getaway, providing that you are well prepared.

A Pirate is Looking at 50 and it is looking pretty good.

P.S. - a friend of mine hooked into a Big tuna the other day, real close to home. He was aching after 2 hours plus (Ssh, it was because he had it on a TLD25) Needless to say they busted the fish off with 100# mono leader. Second hand reporting, it was definitely a tuna with constant head shakes and spiralling downward. They also had one cobia and were seducing another, only to lose both, when the hooked one popped off. So they ended their day with a 20# dolphin, in the ice box.

The rest got away.

The bait are running the shore line here and it seems like we are in full gear for the fishing activity off the south Florida coast. Too bad my job is keeping me so busy right about now.

But I think we should test out those black leaders once again, when you are back on E.S.T.

Thank God that you did not leave your fish Magnets at home.

Tempura style marlin chunks are not half bad either. No harm in taking 1 marlin in the box per year, if you want to.

Big Ned said the Tuna Poke recipe was excellent.

Hey RT, who is big Ned? Regardless I am glad that he liked it. It s good shit!!

No marlin were killed this trip, but they do smoke up nicely. Maybe I will bring you a late holiday gift when I come back from there after New Years.

Maybe we can have some smoked marlin dip in Cabo while watching the sunset from a beach side perspective.

The wifey has been talking of going to Cabo one of these days, so the boys can go fishing. (the big boys that is)

Maybe even this year. It could be a Cabo Wabo moment. I will keep you apprised. Fins to the left.....

Hey there!! Yes that is Capt Bill. He slummed it with us one day and we ended up with 9 tuna and 7 marlin. Looks like he had a good time.

I am going aback for New Years week. Have actually had better luck that week fishing for stripers. And we get to party with Sammy Hagar at Cabo Wabo!!

Well good for him on getting out there one day with you all. Looks like a good time and awesome fishing!!! I'm jealous since we were unable to make it down there this year due to my work schedule. We had an awesome time last year. Great place! Next year!

Cabo is an awsome place...

I caught a 75 lb dolphin there last year... We caught dolphin and raised marlin everyday we fished...

I'm already planning this years trip to go back...

Just don't drink the water...
