Default Best Place To Vacation For Marlin Fishing

We are looking to book a trip sometime in the beginning of 2005 in hopes of hooking up with big marlin. We have been thinking about Costa Rico or Cabo. Any other suggestions?

I'll have tons of pix when we come back.

Mike

Default P.R. - Is on 90 minutes away

Mike:

P. R. Puerto Rico is our own Latin land and is only 90 minutes away. There are multiple places that you can go, of course, San Juan is the closest. If that perks your interest, touch base with Luis Jimenez. He has spent his youth fishing a part of that island for billfish and can probably point you clearly to the best places.

I have a colleague that works in Haiti and he has an acquaintence that is hooked on fishing and we may give it a try. This place is the pits of the Carribbean as far as a place to visit these days. But the fishing can be a totally opposite situation. I wil let you if any plans materialize: I am very curious about the fishing in this area due to the socio-economic situation. Perhaps low pressure for the luxery fish.....

How early in the year?

Don't know about winter, but Venezuela in Spring and St. Thomas in Summer.

Cabo is washed up in my opinion.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to start a debate, but if you want an honest opinion, from someone that's known that place for over 20 years, before you put all your eggs in that basket. I'll tell you what I know and think.

Otherwise, good luck and I wish you the best.

Keep us posted as to when you get set up. I may be in for a trip around Spring Break. I love those Cali, 'Zona, and Texas girls. I just hope my 26 year old game still works. I've been keeping my teeth sharp on College of Charleston girls, but the youngest I've been able to go is 22.

My friends (team No Mas) placed a $50,000 tuna in the Jackpot a few weeks ago. That's two years in a row they got a check. Last year it was for $130,000.

I just returned from fifteen days of hardcore fishing in Cabo. We averaged two marlin per day, in spite of only targetting them a couple of times for folks who wanted to catch them. We had one three sail, two marlin day. The marlin were 50/50 blues and stripers. Three seven hundred pound class blues were landed during our visit. We had all of the dorado that one could possibly want, with some running over fifty pounds. The wahoo were wide open, too - WIDE open with the biggest over ninety pounds. Tuna fishing was only fair, but we caught plenty of smaller models from ten to fifty pounds. They started to arrive in big numbers on the new moon and tuna fishing was going into high gear when we were leaving.

Cabo is NOT dead. It is still one of the best places on earth to go big game fishing. The only difference between now and the past is that it takes better fishermen, tackle and techniques than it used to to rack up consistently excellent catches. If you go, spend money and hire the gunner boats and skip the low end garbage and you will have a great trip.

I'll be back next month and am even considering going back down this month just for the full moon wahoo bite, which can be a mind-bender. The world record is a Baja fish and there are far bigger ones there that simply annihilate the normal and sub-normal fishing tackle used by the average boat there. Not so, us.

Hope to see you down there.

Default cabo

Thanks for your report buddy! Just wondering, how many marlin would a top Cabo boat catch per year? How many blue/black and how many striped? How many charter boats would operate out of Cabo these days? How many private yachts? Interested to know.. there's so much internet info on cabo but they all seem to say the same thing, if you know what I mean..

Mike - would agree St. T and Venez are awesome, but dunno bout the beginning of the year.

Venezula, I have fished there over 20x's and I have caught slams and been on board when we caught super grand slams. These catches have taken place at all different times of the year. You also can get some nice big 100lb +Tuna mixed in and Wahoo/dolphin. Sept-October you can get 10-15 white strikes a day.

Cabo is great, but the 2x's I was there the bite was off. That's fishing. Coasta Rica is awesome, Panama I hear is great never fished it. Salinas Manta was awesome, but the owner of the charter operation died and I don't know if anyone took over is charter bussiness. Fishing out of Elat on the Red Sea produced some nice fishing action when I was there.

Then you Have Hawaii, Madera, Martius, New Zeland, Austrialia, Guam/all the atolls and the west coast of Africa. There are a ton of places do your research, pick a place and then take me .

Default 2 weeks in ecuador and galapagos

I just got back about from a great trip to salinas ecuador . fishing was good one day we raised 11 stripes and 2 blacks caught 1 black about 600 and another striped about 200 lb loads of bigeye and yellowfin 125 to 200 lb saw a swordfish on top Fished out of salinas yacht club Eric holtz runs www.pescatours.com.ec his father was famous angler kurt holtz who passed away a few years ago. Salinas can be hot or cold when it's hot there's nothing like it the humbolt current changes rapidly everyday but you can get a 1000 lb black or blue here at any given time . The galapagos is another story this place was awesome in 1 day i had 35 sightings of stripeys and i landed 6 up to 275 as well as loads of wahoo dorado and tuna email gustavotours@yahoo.com if you want a trip of a lifetime His name is gustavo hernandez and he's a great guy his english no so good if you know what i mean . but this is paradise

hey Mike how did the trip go after? did you manage to get any nice piccies? would love to see em.. eh i've heard quite a bit about fishing Costa Rico, was watching a programme on skytv the other day called 'harcore fishermen'. they were in Rico. some of the presenting was a bit OTT (shouting & screaming) but didn't detract from the fishing. they were hauling in some monster dorado. it looked amazing.. I must get over there 1 day.
