Default Down in Mexico - Marlin and Tuna

My wife and I visited Puerto Vallarta, Mexico last week. Wife was looking to go away on a trip, and I mostly interested in fishing opportunities. She threw out some names, one of which was PV. Previously I had seen something on another forum about Josh Temple and big yellowfin tuna, so PV it was.
I went ahead and made a reservation w/ Josh and started counting the days. The September Sportfishing magazine comes and and holy spit, it's a cover article on Josh and PV yellowfin tuna fishing - I am pumped!

The day finally gets here and we head on down and get settled in our accomodations.

Skippies and birds everywhere. Porpises and YFT busting all around. Troll up 3 skippies in all of 30 seconds and we are fishing.

Fished for roughly one hour and get a bunch of small run-offs and nervously bait and then we are on and I am in the harness.

I had never actually used a stand-up harness before and it took me a while to get used to it. I was worried about my back and arms, but it killed my quads - it was like skiing w/ locals. Twenty minutes later and Trev's got the leader.

My first blue marlin - released and swam away, probbaly feeling better than me.

We set back up w/ the remaining baits and less than an hour later, another big hit. I am a little slicker w/ the setup this time and 15 minutes later, we sink the gaff.

Taped out at 220lbs. Baits in the water less than 2 hours and already I have my two best fish ever. Kinda funny, but the blue is "incidental" - my only hope was a YFT >150. We had steady action over the next couple of hours, but no solid hookups. There were 80-120lb YFT jumping and feeding pretty regularly - looked like a fantasy verison of the mullet run. Late in the afternoon, the bite and teh action slowed as the current died and green water moved in. Having exceed expectations, we headed home.

Can't say enough about Josh and Trevor, I was lucky to fish w/ them. Great people and fisherman. Here is the website if you want to check into a trip.

They stay pretty booked, but they will be adding a second boat that Trevor will be running later this year. I will definitely be back and fish w/ both of them.

We also ended up staying a few days in Puerto Vallarta proper. Stayed at the Marriot and was happy w/ it.

Horse back riding and jungle hike to waterfall

Other than the fishing, i liked Costa Rica more than PV. Next time we go (for the fishing) we will spend all of our time in Punta Mita rather than PV.
