I've got the blue, black, white, sails and sword all I need is a spearfish.
I here Kona is probably the place to go any other advice? If Kona is the best can someone give me an idea of the season or what month is best for spearfish. If possible I'd like to stay in the Atlantic any advice on high probability for spearfish? |

I've heard Kona is by far the best shot you'll get at a shortbill spearfish in the world - only place they're truly common - you'll have to research as for time of year.
And not to rain on your parade but I didn't see Striped Marlin on your very impressive list up there... Nice work though! I'm a spearfish away from the Atlantic slam myself but I've never fished the pacific Good Luck! Ameristrat

I'm working in Kona right now and yes Kona is prob the best place to catch one. You can find them year round but January thru the summer months would give you the best shot with the best chances being in March or April. Also if you come during the summer months you have great Blue Marlin and Ahi to go with it. Give me a shout if you want to hook up out here.

When i went to finish my Royal Billfish Slam, I ended up heading out to Kona for the spearfish. I went the last week of January into the beginning of February and fished with Kevin Nakamaru on the Northern Lights. I was also looking to catch a striped marlin out there, and he said that was the best time for a mixed bag. It all worked out and i ended up catching 3 spearfish. Beautiful little billfish.
As for catching them in the atlantic, well i think you are going to need alot of luck on your side. You have the chance to catch them anywhere, but if you really wanted to catch one, i would think Venezuela or any of the North Atlantic islands like Madieras or the Azores would be your best bet. Without a doubt though Kona, Hawaii is the number one spot in the world to catch the chuckers, as they are called out there. In case anyone was wondering what makes up the Royal Billfish slam, its 9 species....... Atlantic blue marlin Pacific blue marlin black marlin striped marlin white marlin Atlantic sailfish pacific sailfish swordfish spearfish |

When I completed my royal slam I went to Kona and fished with Gene VanderHouk on the Sea Genie. It was in April and caught 4 chuckers in 2 days including a 38lber on 6lb. test. Also caught my biggest blue- over 800lbs released.
That same year in May caught a longbill spearfish right off Boca Inlet. Glad I had a witness for that one , it was an awesome looking fish all light up like a wahoo with a bill! That gave me 10 billfish species. I hear you might have a decent chance for mediteranian spearfish in the Azores in june/July but I would recommend Kona as your best bet.Either Kevin or Gene are good choices. Btw Kevin was the mate for Gene the week I fished with him. Good Luck on your quest. |

I'm missing the striped marlin to complete my Royal Slam which is ironic since it's probably one of the more common billfish. I have caught 3 spearfish off of Hopetown in the Abaco's during the spring. They are very colorful fish and look something like a mahi in the water. Kona is definately the place however since you don't want to know how many days I've spent trolling in the Abaco's.
