We got a blue! It came up and slammed the teaser (a big soft head) then came up behind one of my home made ballyhoo rigs and I said to my self that is one big ass sailfish. The fish nailed the bait and I went into free spool on a tld 20 two speed with 20 lb line, gave her a good 10 seconder and came tight. The fish comes up grey hounding and that’s when we realized it was a marlin. At first I thought the fish was about 250 or so but she was 200 yards behind the boat. I handed the rod off and got on the helm, which is one of my life long dreams to captain a diesel boat (41 albemarle) with a blue on.
I hooked the fish in 700 foot on a small edge with a little bit of weed on it. We were a about 8 miles south of the inlet or so. The fish headed towards the Bahamas. I had to do some professional boat handling with the fish going from 50 yards behind the boat to 250 of the starboard bow in short order. At one point i had the fish right behind the boat about an hour into it and she almost dumped the whole spool with me backing down at 6 knots SE into the current. I thought the entire time she was going to break off, because we only had 50 lb fluorocarbon leader. The last hour we would get the leader right at the surface then she would go back down about 100 feet. We fought her for four and a half hours before we got her to the boat in 1100 feet of water. The guy that was on the leader grabbed it and while he was trying to take a picture the leader finally broke. If we had a fourth on the boat we could have had some nice shots. We did get a good picture with the fishes head out of the water at one point and I am not sure if you can see the fish in the water when we had her behind the boat for the last hour of the fight. She was about 400 lbs maybe better: She made my biggest sword (175) look like a pup. We also got 3 dolphins 2 10s and a 15. It doesn’t get too much better than that out of good old Stuart.

nice catch! A 400 lb fish on 20 lb test would put you in the IGFA twenty to one club if it still existed. Congrats guys!

i heard they've been out there. we caught one in stuart one time in 220 ft of water. i was mating in a sail tourney with 5 dredges out and 20 lb test 50 lb leader on 5/0 hooks...we never did get any sails that day. one guy got a grand slam off jupiter that day with 5 shots at blues, 3 shots and whites, and only 1 shot at sails!!! funny enough, we were marlin fishing in chub later that summer and caught a sail in 3600 ft of water ona marlin lure....i guess you never know what ur gonna catch out there
