My friend Bob and I fished Cape Verde Apr. 23-26th with Capt Matthias Henningsen and mate Steve Hall from Oregon Inlet.
Day 1...4 good bites, pulled hooks on 2 and lost one when it got tangled up in fishing gear from a panga. Day 2...raised 11, 8 bites, released 4.Capt. Zak Conde on Beast N raised 18,15 bites and released 7 with a couple over 500. Day 3...raised 8,7 bites, released 4 all before 12:00. Then wind howled close to 30 and only saw 1 more Day 4...Wind again close to 30. Had one bite on a nice one but went in early due to weather. Our fish were 250-400. One boat released one about 800. Gary Carter trying for world records had 1 on 12 lb about 750 before line broke on Amelia with Capt Marty Bates.Lost another about 650 at the boat. Incredible place for blue marlin. Hooker with Capt. Trevor and mates Ronnie Fields and Randy Baker released 19 in a day years ago.A 31 bertram there in Apr. 2008 went 28 for 60 in two days. Also 240 or so for a season.Capt. Billy Boer on El Zorro mothership operation spent a few seasons there and reports it may be the best blue marlin fishing on the planet. Zak Conde released 15 in a day Apr. 2008. Great group of fishermen there, Matthias, Steve Hall, Kiwi's Marty Bates and Bonze, Zak Conde and others. If your passion is blue marlin, you should try Cape Verde . PM me if need info...John |

John- weather could have been better but it still sounds like a good trip and a great life experience. How hard is it to get there and how long does it take? What does a typical charter cost over there? Whats the best time to go?

Richard,
Boats run from 1,000 to 1,200 Euros a day but some offer deals depending on their bookings.April - July is when they see the most fish per day. They say they see the biggest fish in July-Sept or Oct. Tacv Cabo Verde Airlines has 2 flights a week non stop from Boston to Praia , the capital ,and then a short flight from there to Mindelo on Sao Vacente Island.Connections were bad for us. You can also fly to Lisbon and then to Cape Verde. Also poor connections. Good news is starting Sept. Delta will have a non stop flight from Atlanta. I forgot to state that in May 2008 an American boat, Dreaming On, a large Garlington released 118 blue marlin in 34 days ! So its worth the trip. I hope to return next year. John |

Marty Bates is a great guy I fished with him in Carnes in 2006, he was a mate on the Release. He was telling me then how red hot Cape Verde was.
Below is a pic of a big black I got there
