May Fishing Report - Puerto Vallarta

Considering that Puerto Vallarta offers excellent fishing for much of the year and that it is one of the worlds most famous and important vacation destinations in the world, the areas sport fishing industry is still relatively undiscovered. The bay of Banderas offers a wide selection of fish although the predominant species are marlin and huge tuna.
During the summer and fall months from June to November, the peak Yellow Fin tuna season brings tuna of all sizes, including huge fish pushing close to the 400-pound class. From about September onwards are peak seasons for Dorado (also called Mahi-Mahi or Dolphin Fish), Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, and Wahoo.
Inshore fishing for Jacks, Snappers, and other species is always available, with a good midsummer Roosterfish run during July to August, Jack Crevalle peak during February and March. Various Pargo or Snapper species peak in May and June. Cool water-loving Sierra are most abundant during March and April and there are almost always some Dorado throughout the bay.
The two top offshore fishing spots for Puerto Vallarta boats are around the protruding rocks of ‘Roca Corbetena’ (about 38 miles out) and around the submerged high spot known as El Banco (about 48 miles out). Both areas offer shallow reefs surrounded by drop-offs that produce not only large resident species, but also attract migrating glamour fish such as Yellowfin Tuna and Blue and Black Marlin. Fishing these relatively remote offshore spots when they are "on" is as good as it gets.
But the distances involved (38 to 48 miles) can be daunting as boats run out from Puerto Vallarta and across the huge deep Bahia de Banderas to fish at Roca Corbetena and El Banco, and when conditions are not perfect, only larger boats can make the run efficiently. Closer in are the rocks known as "El Morro" and "Islas Marietas" just off the north end of very wide Bahia de Banderas. Even though this area is about 18 to 26 miles from the marina, it is close enough to be targeted efficiently by pangas and smaller boats and it provides good action on seasonal migrators as well as resident
