Default Reel transportation

We just got 2 new Penn 50 wides and are going down to cabo. We are planning to just carry them on and check the rods. Has anyone had any problem with carrying on reels or is it best to just check them?

I always carry all of my reels in my carry-on bag. Granted, I usually get flagged for some extra searching of my bag and myself when they see all of that metal, but nothing has ever come of it. They see that I have reels, and it's fine. Don't bring your 14/0 hooks in your carry-on, as they'll probably be forbidden.

I have done it a bunch of times with no problem. Make sure to give yourself extra time because sometimes they will take you into the back and go through the boxes.

I go to Cabo twice a year. I used to bring rods and reels in tackle cases. Since 9/11 it has become much more of a hassle to the point that I no longer bring my own tackle. I recommend that you charter a good boat with good tackle and unless you are fishing a tournament, I' d leave my reels home. I do bring lures and harnesses and ballyhoo and a cooler. And Boboe is correct-Do not carry on anything sharp such as a fishing hook-I had to cut the hooks off of my cedar plugs when I forgot them in my carry on. If you have any questions or want some recomendations you can PM me.
