Lure Feeding Bait

I may start housing some gogs out the house a few days before we fish. Last time we housed blue runners for more than a few days, we noticed they were getting skinny, so we bought a box of chum and hung i over the cage. Most of the fish fattened back up. But I there must be a better way?

What is the proper way to feed your baits?

Thanks

Belive it or not, we feed our baits bread, and sometimes oatmeal. Sounds like chum is probably better, but they eat up our bread and stay fat.

We have noticed that in the summer, that our canals are extremely hot and keeping pilchards, herrings, or other batis caught in the ocean is a tough task for more than a couple nights. My best bet has been to never overload the pen when its hot. In the winter time I jam it packed.

We have always used chum or cut up ballyhoo/squid.

How much are you feeding them at a time?

Canned cat food. The cheap stuff. You can mix it up w/ the oats and it'll fatten em up better. Be careful not to keep em penned too long . They'll beat up thier noses on the sides of the pen and get infections . Then they end up being listless, not so hearty offerings.
Good Luck,
DF2

The water on the bottom will be colder than that on top. Get a holding pen with a good latching lid, and let your bait pen sit right down on the bottom. I usually feed my baits some cut squid or something similar.

Some baits will last a week, others will last a day. It depends on the species. Hard tails are about as tough as a bait gets. They'll often live a week or more. Pinfish will turn red tailed and be essentially worthless in 3-5 days, depending on temperature and concentration of baits. Cigar minnows and herring last only a couple days.

All of the above is pertaining to the harbor in Destin, FL, which may or may not be more filthy water than your harbor.
