i was curious, if catching bigger (200# and up) swords is more frequent with live bait vs dead or squid. tek, what were you using at the "swordlight" tourney. my last trip we hooked the biggest so far. dont know how big it was cause it was disrespecting my employee all over the back of the boat. i knew he was done when the fish had him pinned to the gunnel with only 15# of drag. i should have taken a pic of the defeated angler it was pretty cool. that was the same time he pulled the hook and we lost him. the only bait i have fished so far is squid.

just2fish,
I can honestly tell you that when I was fishing live gogs as well as dead squid my ratio was 50/50. I've caught fish on both equally. Matter of fact, I had a "jumbo" hooked up on an artificial squid drifted just like a natural. We estimated the weight at @250 but like you we pulled the hooks after 2 hours. I now fish only artificial and dead squid because it cuts back the time factor in preparing for a nice sword outing. Outcome seems to be the same. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

It definitely doesn't hurt to have at least a couple of live baits in the spread as some nights the fish seem to have a preference for sure. No matter what the live bait, however, your hook up ratio will improve substantially if you trim the tail. (I'm not talking about a little bit either here, but just how much to trim varies according to species.)

Match the hatch is always the best start, right? If tinkers are around, better fish a few of them.
Best spread had livies and squid, often the livies in the spread will trigger a fish to hit a squid when it can't catch the livies. |

We have fished live bait, and squid many of times.
And we have noticed that almost every one of are big fish have been on the squid. Including one that was 500+ that was lost at the boat after 8 hours. But its always good to have a varied spread. Good Luck |
