Live Bait

Im sure someone here could help me out. I want to build a cage to hold live Pilchards and bait of similar size until im ready to fish with them. What i was wondering is whether a square pen will do or is it better if it is round like a live well?Also i heard that you should leave it in the water so it grows stuff on it before you put the first set of fish in it true or not neccessary?if anyone has other suggestions as to shape, size, mesh size, type of material(netting or wire) that would be great. thanks alot

A real simple cage can be made from a large rubbermaid trash can. I drilled many multiples of 1/2 inch holes in the top, sides and bottom and then attaced some 5# dive weights to the bottom. The handles on these lock the top and you can tie a rope to those handles for lowering and raising the trap into and from the water.

get a bucket with two holes drilled near the top and bottem and have a bilge pump circulating the water throught the inlet and the outlet (which are the two holes)

55 gallon plastic drumz are nice. Drill out 3/8"-1/2" holez throughout. Cut out the lid w/ a jig saw. Then use either a brass piano hinge or bent strips of pliable plastic ( like a 5gal bucket lid ) for the lid hinge. You can add a hasp to keep er shut on the other side. Even add a lock if security is an issue

Got mine from a friend who owns a millwork shop. It was a lacquer thinner container. Saw a couple by the side of the road on salerno rd last week for sale...Didn't stop to check em out. Not sure what else they are really used for besides chemical containers. The heavy duty trash can works. I'll look this weekend to see if those ones I saw are still there if they are I'll drop you a line
