Default Live Bait Options

OK I don't want to start an argument btw. fishing dead bait vs. live bait but I would like to know via a poll, peoples general live bait preference when Blue Runners, Gogs, or Tinkers are not available. I am listing a few that I have used in tough situations when I have not been able to get my favorites. Most have had mixed results.

1- Speedos
2- Snapper (Mangrove,Yellowtail,Lane, etc...)
3- Grunts (White,Yellow,Blue Stripe, etc...)
4- Pinfish
5- Mullet
6- Herring (Pilchards, Greenies, Thread, Etc...)
7- Leather Jacket (I.E. Skip Jack, Stick Back)
8- Anything else you have had success with???

Small catfish, Take dykes and cut fins off, They are slow movers compared to runners.

big fat RAINBOW RUNNER. Just as tough to get as the other baits though usually.

Yes , Yes, Yes, CONO...... Turtle and I had a big ole Dania Mullet He caught under My dock get nailed the last time out, or was it time before?

Another tip I got from a Coast Guard guy during my 2am -1hr long saftey and personel check, Ladyfish,
actually 2 lessons learned, monitor chanel 16, would have been shorter check since they were angry, wet, and cold from chasing Me for 45 min in a rubber boat through 4' seas

I think he's pulling your leg, I've never had a ladyfish stay alive in a livewell for more than two minutes. They go bonkers and that' all she wrote.

I know a lot of guys donw in Flamingo and 10K islands that use live lady fish all the time for big snook and Tarpon. Yopu can keep em alive, but I've never really tried.
I bet a dead ladyfish would work good too....

Broadbill: I've had ladyfish of the 1-2' variety stay alive in my livewell for 2 days. I did the math on my livewell, and it's something like 92 gallons, racetrack shaped, has a counter-clockwise flow to it, and is powered by a bigass pool pump. I can have it black with bait, and keep them alive.

I ahvent had great success with menhaden. Have any of you? I then made the mistake of keping them in my fridge...I still have nightmares from the smell. Ive had luck with small sheepshead, pinfish, SMALL cutlassfish, rainbow runner, herring and mullet. The mullet although get annoying how they and most of the other schooling baitfish pollute the live well. Ive never kept ladyfish alive but I have successfully usen bluefish and live squid.

Squid never lived in my livewell for more than an hour or two. I think it has way too much current for them to deal with.

You keep them in a separate one without a current but still air. you just do a 50% water change every half hour.

aha! Thanks guys. I guess I'd have to get a Wal Mart special "Big Bubbles," a few cases of D batteries, and a clean 5 gallon bucket and I'd be in there. Whenever I've caught nice big squid, it's been incidental and we weren't going swording. Those big squid went straight on ice and once we were done bait fishing I put them in zip locks and rolled them up tightly and put them in the freezer. They really looked great and caught us a few fish. Live would be the tits though. Again, thanks for the info.

Speedos are killer. But they are usually tougher to come up with than runners. It sounds like you may need some new bait spots. On the days when the bait seems a little scarce, anchor upstream of your favorite shallow rock pile 15' - 40'. CHUM, CHUM' CHUM try different color sabiki's
diff size diff lenghts of rigs. After a while you'll get a sense for what rig to bomb em with. If your still struggling PM me we'll take a bait cruise. Haven't purchased bait in 5 years its nice. You don't get nearly as PO'd when the bonitos eat $60 worth of bait in 5-6 mins. With a live well full of pearly baits you just gaff those bonies to use for chum, re-bait and keep right on fishing. Its a self perpetuating system I picked up when I couldn't afford bait. Now I could afford it but why there is always some decent bait somewhere. Just boils down to wether or not your willing to work a litttle for it

I prefer little piss ant gogs. Tinkers come 2nd. rainbow runners 3rd. blue runners 4th. and if you can keep them alive, speedos 5th.
