They're usually a nuissance, but what is the best way to target large runners. Those 9" mamoths that we despise to get from the bait guy when sailfishing. Is there a way to catch them at that size consistently (over the summer). I have a few ideas but I wonder if anyone else has doen it with consistency.

I take my grandson's out to the mooring balls off Commercial, put out a chum bag in 20' of water, and let the kids go nuts on catching stuff on live shrimp. Last trip they caught a bunch of 12" and up runners that tried to rip the rods out of their hands. Great fun.
At the dock they were active in the bait well for over a week. Some went fishing and came back. They make great deep drop bait, decapitated and cut into chunks which they are still wiggling. I finally released the last of them.

You can do any and all of the above things. They all work. Another way to get them, and GET THEM QUICK is to drag your spanish mackerel trees. You know, those long shank hooks that've got red, yellow, or green tubing on them. Drag a tree with a small spoon on the back end, and you'll haul the 'tails in 4 at a time.

I have been catching large ones in Marathon lately and can't seem to find the small ones.
When trolling with the tube lures, are you trolling on the surface or with a weight to get the lures down? |
