Default Bait off Port Everglades

Its sailfish season and live baiting is my method of choice. I can usually load up on Hoos on the white balls South of PE but for some reason I have a hard time with pilchards and Gogs.

Wondering if anyone can guide me in the right direction?

Also has anyone kept live bait in a pen in the new river or on the dania cut off canal? I would love a bait pen but im not sure they could withstand the brakish water.

Thanks

Tightline!!!!!

I fish with a good friend out of PE every now and then. Recently we got Gogs in the inlet just before sunrise. They were pretty thick and the bait boat would give away their location (that guy is not very friendly).

Otherwise we buy or do the ballyhoo thing off the balls. Not sure where the pilchards are around there?

Gogs won't take to the new river. Have tried in vain to keep them alive in brown water. They will take a couple hours of it before they expire.

The mouth of the port is the real deal if you don't want to get up real early. About an hour before sunrise you start to pick at them, and then the big wave will come in for a few minutes and then they are gone. Haven't done pilchards there in a while, but the white balls was the spot...and you have to be real early for that....they would disappear at 4ish. May be able to get them closer to Dania Pier.

So you just sabiki right near both jetties before sunrise? Is that more effective than the ships?
