Default G'day from Downunder

G'day all,

Marty from Australia here. Longtime viewer, first time poster. I fish the southwestern waters of Bass Straight in Victoria. Prime target species are Yellowtail King fish and big Southern Bluefin Tuna.

We do have Broadbill Swordfish here, and am very keen get get into a bit of that action.

Heading to Hawaii in May this year and am looking foward to do a bit of fishing on a charter while there.

Here's a pic of my rig. It's a Haines Hunter 585r powered by a 200 Evinrude Etec lightweight. The shelf is located 50kms offshore from my home port of Port Fairy. We normally troll for game fish, or deep drop in 200 plus meters for blueeye and harpuka.

Look forward to learning a bit from you all.

Cheers

Marty

G`day and good morning Marty,

I think that you may be one of the largest ports closest to Tasmania. Great fishing. I have a good many friends in NSW and Queensland and Scarboro beach in WA. Most of the fisherman that I know in AU are top water and Big game billfish fisherman. This website can defiantly steer you in the right direction for rigging and technique for catching swords from the deep. Welcome Aboard

G'day boys,

We are just waiting for these buggers to show up. Should be anytime soon...

That's an 85kg Southern Bluefin Tuna. We get them much bigger to around 130kg. That's the biggest I've managed to land.

Tackle Engineer, we are off to the west of Victoria and the bottom eastern end of Australia. Tassie is off to the east below us. We also get these from time to time..

We call them Maui maui - I like Dorado myself.

Cheers

Marty

I don't think I've ever seen a yellow-tail kingfish. Have any pictures of those? Nice tuna by the way!

Interesting. Same sort of yellotail they catch in California? I know of those. When it comes down to it, I've just never fished the pacific.

G'day All,

Here is a Yellowtail Kingfish.

They are very similar to amberjack (I think that's what you guys call them).

We also target Mako and Thresher Sharks like this one

All of the pics show dead fish. We do release a few

Cheers

Marty

Thumbs up

Welcome to the board Marty,

Take a look at The Ultimate Fishing Show - theultimatefishingshow.com if you want to see how they target the big girls in Kiwi Country; I am sure the same techniques they use next door will work in your neck of the woods....only thought is.....you might need a bigger boat to get to three kings....

Check out their video section on swording...

Tight Lines,

Frank

Welcome to the site Marty. Looking forward to hearing your fishing tales. I have always wanted to travel down under. Every one that I know that has visited has always had great things to say about the people and the land.

Used to watch Malcolm Florence fishing down under back in the day and was always impressed.

Regards,

Martin

Mal was a legend. He opened up new frontiers here. Unfortunately, he passed away some time ago of a heart attack in his early fifties. He was very fit as well.

We are expecting the Southern Bluefin Tuna to fire up anytime soon It's been a huge summer on the Threshers and Makos. Heaps of big kings about as well. Heading out tomorrow in search if a big Mako.

Cheers and thanks for the welcome.

The tuna season is in full swing down here at the moment. I've had 7 trips for 72 southern blue fin and albacore.

A couple of cows weighed in by mates..

Here's one that went 126.5kg (278 pounds)

He held the record for a couple of weeks until another guy topped it and weighed in one that went 127.5kg (280 1/2 pounds)

Excellent fishing at the moment. The blues are being caught from western South Australia, all the way through to the east coast of Tasmainia (that would be about 2000 miles of coast / shelf. We are right in the middle.

Cheers
