Default Great hunt with daughter

Took my 7yr old daughter hunting with me this weekend. We had a great time. Sat afternoon we had a little fork horn walk in for us. He milled around awhile and my daughter was so happy to see a deer in the stand. Then about 10 min later I hear a step behind me downwind!! I turn my head and see this nice deer 30 yds away getting a nose full of us. I tell my daughter big buck and she covers her ears!! lol even before I had the gun up. Well I really did not think a deer would walk up downwind of us without taking off. He took a few steps forward and put his head behind some cover. This gave me a chance to swing around and get the gun up. Then he took another few steps and cleared the cover broadside at 35yds. I kept waiting for him to blow and take off. He was on alert but just taking small steps. Well I let the ole 06 ring out and dropped him in his tracks!! It was awesome to have my daughter with me. We were both shaking so hard after. I was trying to text my wife and my daughter was laughing at me trying to text because I could not type from the shaking. LOL Then she saw how much she was shaking!!!

She just kept smiling and hugging me it was a trip I will never forget. This my friends is what it is all about!!!

The next morning we slept in a bit. I was ready to relax back in camp but she would not stand for that!lol So we jump in my cart and ride back in a bit. It was about a half hour after sunrise when we started staking around. We walked a few hundred yards and some does popped out in front of us. It was a little misty with the sun rise behind them. They were about 60 yards out and did not see us. They walked around a bit and faded in to the mist. We backed out of there and went around to another trail. While walking down that one the tallest hog I have ever seen ran out in front of us. I swear I could have rode it!!! It was almost up to my waist!!! We went back to camp and went fishing in our pond for a bit and crushed a bunch of small bass. It was a great trip for sure.

Default Nice Post

Great Story Eric,

Your kid looks pretty happy. My best memories of my dad were doing anything with him. Fishing, hunting, boating or whatever was a bonus.
Just spending time with him was key. I was invited to my buddys lease this weekend but I had committted to work allready He sent me some nice pictures and one was that Turkey I want to get. Next year I will leave my weekend free around opening season.

Thanks for sharing your day with us!

I don't know how you swung that with your daughter, if I took my daughter hunting and killed a deer she would rip the gun off my hands and kill me for having killed "Bambi".... and then my wife would kill me a second time for taking my daughter to kill "Bambi"....

Well Sam it is a process. First they need to be untaught there Disney education!! Hunters are not evil!!! Bambi does not talk to thumper and so on. She was been going in to the woods for a few years with me. No hunting just walking or riding in the woods. Then she started to watch hunting shows with me. Any time I saw a kid or girl hunting I hit the dvr buttom to show her later. Then started asking her questions about hunting. Like should they shoot that deer on tv or wait. Where should they shoot that deer etc. Then she started playing hunting video games. Then last year I took her in the stand a few times. The first couple trip were rough. I needed to understand a 6yr old can not sit still for 4hrs in a stand!LOL But now we have it dialed in to what she can handle and what she can not.

The hardest part is getting the general public over the bambi attitude. I had a friend of my mother in law go batty that I took my daughter to kill a deer. She is a card caring PETA nut job. This is what I wrote to her.

You know the old saying if you can not say something nice don't say anything. She knows more about animals then any kid her age. She also loves animals more then anyone. She also knows about hunting and what it is about. She is more conected to animals and the outdoors then you can imagine!!! She is and always will be a lover of animals the outdoors and hunting. The future of animals and the outdoors are in the childrens hands. It will be people like Abby that will insure those animals will still have a habitat to live in. People like Abby will educate others about the outdoors and how we need to protect wildlife. It will be her spirt for the wild and all things in it that will endure long after I am gone. I never forced her to do this. She does it all on her own. When I go with out her she is mad. She loves the wild and all it's beauty.

She can walk in to the woods and tell you what kind of animal made what track and if it is fresh. She can tell you what animal made what sound. She can tell you what bird just flew over your head . Now ask me how she can do this and 99.9 percent of kids today do not know one animal or bird from the next.

I am sad for you because you will never understand.By the way I use bows (like the indians) Blackpowder(like davy crockett) and rifles to hunt with. Question for you about the no positive thing. Who founded Americas National park system? Where does the money come from to buy land to keep it from being developed? Where does the money come from to pay the people who protect our wildlife. What was the Whitetail population 300yrs ago? Can you look at a deer on the hoof and tell me its age? Do you know the history and genetic make up of the deer in your area? Have you ever seen what an overpopulated deer herd looks like and what happens to them? How many acres of land have you our any organization you belong to saved? Again Rhoda I feel sorry for you not to be as close and connected with nature as me and my girls.

This was her final reply to me.

I don't feel sorry for you. I have never felt sorry for the ignorant and the brutal. The only good thing I ever heard about hunting is that when many rednecks engage in this activity they often shoot each other.

Quack,
I've tried that with my family and the answer I got was that's OK for you, but I don't want my daughter killing defenseless deers, I'll give it another try and see what happens..

thanks,

Sam

Ask her if it would be better if the deer had guns..!!LOL Deer can be tough I would start with hogs!! They are nasty dirty little breeders that need to be thinned!!!! If you can get the ok on hogs the deer will follow if your daughter wants it. Heck I have to mount the racks in my daughters room now to go with her turkey feathers and hog skull!!LOL
