I had a day off from running trips. So when I got the call to go fun fishing what did I do, I went fishing. I ran out to the Lump with Will Wall and a buddy of his. We made it to the lump after a bumpy ride out but with the forcast of decreasing winds in the afternoon it wasn't a problem. Once we arrived at the lump I set a simple three rod wahoo spread. After a few laps we got a good knockdown on a 10" Yo-Zuri bonita plug. It almost bit completely through the plug which is the reason I think we didn't get a good hookup on him. So now it was wahoo 1 humans 0. We trolled around for a little more with nothing else to show for it but some bonito for chum. A couple of other guys were anchored up on charters and the report from them was no tuna only sharks and bonito. We decided to anchor up anyway and chum. After a few hours of frustration we gave up on chumming and tied the anchor off to the ball and went back to pulling baits. While on the anchor it was so bad that if you put on a whole bonito fillet you would catch guess what another bonito or either some of the biggest hammerhead and bull sharks you have ever seen. Back to trolling we had two triple knockdowns that resulted in one wahoo in the upper 40 pound range. meanwhile we are watching the other two boats fight yellows and land a few blackfin while drifting. So with only one fish in the box and it late in the fourth quarter and the fat lady warming up. We decided to give it one last shot by chunking on the drift. It paid off almost instantly with a few blackfin and suprisingly no bonito. Then they showed up at first it was only one yellow. But by chumming heavier the pack found us. We had at least 10 yellows behind the boat eating whatever you threw at them from poppers to chunks of bonito and poagie. We very quickly put six yellowfin in the boat from 70-90lbs. It was a triple two on chunks and one on a popper. Then a single and a double to cap it off. We also managed to catch a few blackfin which most of them were turned into tuna chum. The total catch for the day was 6 yellows from 70-90, 1 wahoo upper 40's and 5 blackfin. It was a great day nothing broke or was lost. Except for a bunch of Frenzy 7/0 hooks.
