On Sunday seven of us jumped out of the boat armed with an arsenal that would send a Texas snook clearly all the way to Florida. The arsenal included gold spoons, every topwater made for man, and even a few famous corky’s. The mullet were thick and the snook were ever so present. This group wanted to target trophy snook. First thing in the morning our topwaters drew some big explosions; the snook were so aggressive on the topwaters that they would literally push it out of their way as they would come up out of the water to smash the bait. Early on a few big ones were lost and one that broke off Power Pro braided line in 12/50 class. Two trout pushing 26 inches were hooked but only one was landed and released. Along with some rat reds, a few small snook were caught and released. At our next stop Jay.W.Puig from Laredo and a snook over 26 inches gave us all a show (it made about 5 good jumps). Not everyone had even gotten off the boat when he struck that snook using a bone super spook jr; Jay gave us a glimpse of what was to come. As everyone lined up, rods started to bend with snook at the end of their lines. Some more big ones were jumped off and others were landed, photographed, and released. In all, all seven of us caught a snook. The total number of snook we caught and released was 15. Four snook were between 24 and 26 plus inches. And as a bonus a couple of the guys got into some redfish action on topwaters in the same general area. The snook are in their full spawn and have gotten very agitated and aggressive towards anything that swims by especially our topwater baits. I would have to say it doesn’t get any better on the LLM than catching a trophy snook on topwater. Congradulations goes to Jay. W. Puig and Marcus Arrendondo on their fine looking snook. All snook were released to be caught another day.
