Been hibernating and enjoying some restful days away from everything..coming off the tail end of a 36 hour "marlin or bust" adventure with the Jackson boys which ended Saturday in the rain and a bust on marlin..we decided to start at Medusa at dawn Friday and work our way west..apparently not far enough though..we didnt see squat! It seemed like the billfish were being hooked by plenty other boats to the west and east of us (radio probably picked up 60 miles of traffic) but we just couldnt make it happen aside from two tuna and two small dolphin..those are the breaks of billfishing..but for all the effort and planning I was disapointed..managed to save the day with grouper and snapper on the way home..and probably would have placed a few of them on the board had the boys decided to let them stay overnight in cooler in Empire..The big snapper and grouper have been a great surprise; particulalry the Polish variety..we have had at least one in the last 10 trips (which is the limit incdentally)..Leon had a hell of a bottom catch yesterday..with 18 snapper, limit of jacks and a few groupers one of which was a huge 50+ pound gag..Sonny ran 2 tuna trips over the weekend netting 4 yellows Saturday before heading off to the grouper grounds to build confidence..yesterday was a bust for him unfortunately but he did peg amberjack and a big warsaw on the ride home..he was fishing Elf (which incidentally along with Mars/Usra/The Lumps (both of them) and Medusa; is one of the double secret tuna holes) He and James Peters enjoyed the back an forth radio chatter and commentary that followed the barrage of attacks on the schools of skyrocketeers that some of the more talented tuna fisherman made with thier boats..From the way it was described to me..the evaluation commitee feels that the captains of these vessels were trying to macerate the feeding tuna with their props while 4 guys tossing poppers picked up the peices in the wake..apparently it was a one shot-all or nothing venture as the tuna would sound for a good while afterwards..guess we'll have to try that technique next slow day..In other current events; Leon ran a marlin charter today and found one lone 25 pound wahoo in scattered grass south of Elf..hoping to turn things around and get out of the down swing..there are always great days to look forward to on the road ahead, but I wish summer wouldnt end...Paradise Outfitters - 985-845-8006
