Beach Closed Because Of Manatee Poop Has Reopened
Park Was Shut Down Thursday
POSTED: 4:50 am EDT October 10, 2009
UPDATED: 9:03 am EDT October 10, 2009

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- A popular park along Vero Beach's coast has reopened after officials cleaned up a long stretch of what they believed to be manatee poop.

Humiston Park Beach was shut down Thursday when the excrement was discovered.

Indian River County officials say they did a "feel and smell test" to determine whether the waste was human. They contacted state wildlife officials, who told them it could be from manatees, but no samples were ever tested.

The beach was littered with hundreds of piles of the stuff.

Lifeguards closed it while city workers buried the waste several feet into the sand.

County officials say it's rare for feces from manatees migrating along the coast to wash ashore, but recent high winds may have stirred it up from the ocean floor.

Is this even possible?

They did a "feel and smell" test - "no samples were ever taken"

Let me get this straight miles of crap floats up on the beach, the officials get called in, they do a "feel and smell test" ...some guy says "Nope, this doesnt feel or smell like mine" and so they bury it on the beach without taking samples

Seriously?

The Manatees started to shit when they heard Obama was getting a Nobel Prize, so I guess Obama may be bad for the environment...

My guess is "cruise ship shit". Yep
What city official would ever admit to human feces on the beach. That would be devastating to the already dismal tourism industry.
They will call it Manatee poop to give Vero the "environmental friendly" immage of a Manatee haven.
How many friggin Manatees does it take to shit up a mile of beach? a couple thousand at a time ? I don't buy it for a second.
A more believable answer is a cruise ship with 5000 people on it with 3 days of holding tank discharge in one flush. A good east wind and there you have it. Prolly had a couple hunerd condoms in the mix too....but those would just be called rainbow man-o-wars.

Any cruise ship presently in service has to be equipped by international law with a sewage disposal system. The system consists of a maceration system, a treatment tank where the raw sewage is chemically treated, and then a holding tank where the treated sewage has to be held for a minimum of 3 days before it can be discharged overboard in international waters. If you could see it there would be nothing more than a grayish colored stream being discharged from the ship that is bacteria free after chemical treatment and holding.

Ships are not even allowed to have piping that could allow the direct discharge of sewage overboard and even gray water (sinks and showers) are subject to treatment and holding.

Is it possible whatever was seen was something that inverted up from the bottom and washed ashore? A cruise ship was definitely NOT the culprit. Harry
