Ok, I did some research on this topic and this was the best story behind the banana myth I have found.
Way back when the trading ships from Europe were coming to this part of the world to barter and trade for different items, the banana was a sought after commodity. Unfortunately most of the folk involved did not realize how fast a banana went from almost ripe to ripe to downright rotten. Sure enough the first few ships to be filled with the amazing yellow fruit had filled their holds with bananas that were almost ripe. Hmmm how long did it take for those ships to get from the Carribbean or Central America back to England? Well as anyone can attest a shipload of rotten bananas has a high and nasty stench. These vessels were banned from entering the harbors and were made to put back to sea to dump their rotting cargo. Hence, what we have today, no bananas on the boat. Does it really hinder fishing? Thats for each boat owner/captain to decide on.     Gas prices in Jamaica have reached an all time high. US$4.00 per gallon. Hmmm maybe time to take up golf. It was great meeting everyone at the swordfish meeting last week. Great to finally put faces to the nicknames. Take care all, tight lines and screaming drags. |

Jerry:
Bananas - Thanks for the clarification on the "Banana on Board" subject. So a boatload of Bananas is not a good idea without proper gas or refrigeration. I guess I had a totally different perspective ever since my youth: I recall my Grandaddy telling me stories of all the Banana boats arriving into Gulfport, MS as we would see ships coming into port from Central American ports, as viewed from the shorelines of Biloxi. So for me, bananas coming in by the boatload was a fine, acceptable and a completely lucrative situation. I guess I was so naive, to think that a BIG boat load of Bananas was not a good thing. So I still cannot fathom any angler not having a desire to have at least a bunch on board. (A barrel full of Monkeys may not be such a good idea though.) Bananas are good for you. Especially after a night of drinking Rum drinks followed by further dehydration due to constant perspiration. The bananas will help get your electrolytes back in balance again and provide you with muscular endurance to muscle in those wiley tooners and swordfish. As for me and my family and fishing cohorts, we will have Bananas on our vessel, thank you. (Blender, ice, bananas, OJ, etc. and you're on track for a delightful treat on a hot summer day.) Gas Prices - 4.00 $US was the price for Gasolina in DR in June before the Supply crunch. Must be 4.50 $US by now. I guess we are the fortunate ones here on the continental mainland, only $2.75/ gal. Still cheaper than bottled water, should you DO that. But a 1/2 gallon of filtered water in a used Gatorade bottle can put more fuel in your tank if you need to economize. It may not be enough to get you to the inlet but it is a START. Fishing - Man, we have a notable wind event bearing down on us this weekend. But I cannot wait to get out swordfishing again. I want to get one of those fish just over 100 kg. So if we cannot fish tomorrow or the next day, might as well have a swordfish party. Dinner - So tomorrow I think we willhave a side by side fish comparison. Does a Pumpkin swordfish taste any better than standard flesh colored swordfish? We have some fresh caught pumpkin and some nearly fresh caught, from swordlords night. Perhaps we can do a myth busters experiment on this too. I'll let you know what we find out. |

Last night we had a "Day after the Hurricane Party".
