The migrants might not say thet were rescued :???: and the woman would be alive if the coast gaurd stopped the boat sooner.Or just follow it till it came in and after the people got off get them and the smugglers.But I guess with the old wet foot dry foot crap they did not want to risk them making to shore.So it was better to chase them in dangerous conditions and shoot at a boat full of people then to chance them making it to land. :twisted: This should be under the headline what were they thinking.

Sorry unless I am misunderstanding your thoughts here, the guy driving could have stopped the boat :!: You can not blame the CG for anything here, these guys were doing something illegal and were busted :!: If they were not smuggling them and found them on a sinking boat why didn’t they call the CG in the first place :?: Guess that would have made to much sense :shock: If I was out there and saw 10 people on a raft I would not invite them on my boat but would call the CG to pick them up. I would not leave them until CG showed up to save them. These are desperate people trying to get here, and they might throw you off the boat and leave you to the sharks.

My condolences to the family for their loss, but lets be for real here. CG tells you to stop when you are 39 miles out you stop! You can not out run them so why try, and get someone killed in the process.

Some of the laws suck, but they are still the laws.

I agree they should have stopped and were doing something wrong.But my thought were of the people on the boat not the smugglers.Shooting from a boat to a boat in 4ft seas while moving at 30mph is crazy when people are sitting a few feet away from the motors :shock: If everyone on board were pirates or drug smugglers open fire but with woman,children and such I feel the CG should have layed back and not pushed them so hard.Yes it is easy to armchair this situation but I think they should have been followed to shore.Then arrested once the people were safe.

Just thinking out of the box I would have drug a 100ft of rope in front of that boat and jammed the props.I know this works because most of us have run over rope before and seen the results.It would have stopped that boat without gun fire and been safer for all involved.

I think it boils down to the wet foot dry foot thing.If they were Cuban and stepped on land they can stay but if taken off a boat they are returned.I think that is why they were not followed then arrested.

They were chased because they ran :!: The CG is trained to shoot in any sea conditions those people were never in any danger of getting shot. Except for the DA that was acting like a human shield to protect the engines . If you have nothing to hide why run :?:

Drag a rope good idea :?: if these guys were not hauling ass and ramming into the CG boat when they had a chance.


I have been on boats that have been stopped and boarded numerous times, even while Most all of the CG, BSO, Marine Patrol, and other Law enforcement guys out there are very cool people. :thumleft: Just do not be stupid :drunken: :high , run from them or be a smart ass.

The smugglers are totally at fault and should be taking all the responsibly for the women’s death.

I think it is a catch 22, if they were drug smugglers they could have opened fire at anytime. This time they were people smugglers. The Coasties had it tough.

I think it was a bunch of illegals being smuggled into the country and were caught. The CG has rules to follow and procedures of doing things in these situations. They are trained to do what they do to protect our country. When the boat refused to stop they were forced to make them stop. PERIOD.
