Hi everyone. My name's Max. Here's the deal. In April I'm sailing on a merchant vessel (500ft. ex-navy ship) from the San Francisco bay down to Valparaiso, Chile and back. We'll also be stopping in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, Lima, Peru and Caldera, Costa Rica. I want to fish from the ship. So here's my questions:
1. What type of fish will I be fishing for? 2. What should be used as a lure/bait? 3. I need a rod and reel. Can you suggest some that arent too spendy? Thanks for all of your help everyone. -Max |

Welcome. You can expect to catch a bit of evertthing.
I would go with an average size lure that will entice dolphin and tuna. The last thing you want tis a 500 pound blue marlin and trying to chase it down on your sailboat. Go with Island Lures or Black Bart. Something with a lot of line preferably brade since you will be trolling alot. Good Luck |

When we run in our trawler like to try for dinner. If your on a ship Idon't think you will be stopping for a fish. I tie 100 yds of 400# mono, use a bungy cord as a shock cord,5' of 200# cable and a large Rapala. I have this all set up on a Appx. 10" plastic spool that I purchased for about $5.00 at a local tackel shop. I hand wind. It's not real sporty but it puts the vittels on the table. If you can't stop I think you would be hard pressed to reel it in. I only travel at about 10kts and if I don't slow down it's a tuff pull. I also let them fight the trawler for awhile.
BB hb I should also add, I have seen the local fuel tanker running around the Bahamas with what looks like 800#??? or more mono tied to the rail and they just toss it over the rail about 20' ahead of the stern. They hand line it and coil, & tie to rail when not in being fished.
