I just bought the VERY FIRST Avet T-RX 30 wide ever sold (FYI: I pulled some strings with Avet and a distributer in Florida, who persuaded Avet to send the reel directly to me in CA))... I tested the T-RX 30W out this weekend on a 225 pound thresher shark... All I can say is welcome to the future... Although the optimum line to use for this reel is straight 130 pound hollow spectra with a short leader, I rigged it with 500 yards of 100 pound solid spectra with 50 yards of 80 pound mono top shot---This being the ideal rigging for the common threshers on migratory routes in my region... I hooked the beast and winched it in in less than 20 minutes... The drags are the smoothest I have ever fished with!... Of course, it felt a little wierd at first to have such a huge fish on such a light reel (55 oz), I got used to it quickly, and felt much less fatigued after the battle (as I am accustomed to using Tiagra 50 wide reels, weighing almost 90oz)... Ironically, The T-RX 30 puts out almost precisely twice the drag pressure as does the Tiagra 50wlrs (over 80lb)...

MMafan:
Isn't AVet making reels in CA? I am surprised you had to call east to get you reel out west? Not a bad thing, but from a few things I have heard from Tek, is that most of the leading edge starts on the west coast and the east side may trail a few years to carry the momentum. I certainly can concur with that trend since I working out in Silicon Valley in the late 90's and got the general observation that current trends in technology and other new concepts were West coast centric first before propagating east and beyond. One thing that I question with that T-Rex 30... I would like to hear feadback on having so much drag potential on a small diameter spool. I thought that a 50 wide with robust drag (like 50 lbs.) was amazing. But it gets to a point that drag as a function of resistance and the radius of the line on the spool must have an optimum balance. But I would just love to have a 30 size reel with the Moxey of a 50 lb. class reel. But I think that 80 lbs. is to much. But quad drag is cool. Calabunga! Just need to keep it dialed down a bit. |

A Thresher Shark isn`t much of a test for a big game reel. They can`t move fast enough, nor far enough to test a reel`s ability. Let us know what happens when you tie into a 2C YFT. That does sound like a standup fisherman`s dream rig though.

The regular Avet Pro 30W has allready been tested out on 200+lb YFT with true colors of success... The Pro 30W has a max drag of 40 pounds (precisely 1/2 the drag of the T-RX 30W)... The Pro 30W and T-RX 30w have an identical spool... If the regular 30 wide passed the test, I'd wager that the T-RX 30W would with greater ease... The T-RX 30W has four drags (2 on each side of the spool), while the Pro 30W has two discs on only one side of the spool.. Hence the T-RX is kept twice as cool in the heat of battle---with heat evenly distrubuted)... I would still choose to use my T-RX 50N on Yellowfin tunas though, as I have heard those tunas are stronger than shit!!!...

Although there may be a better anything, one of the most important factors in choosing anything worth owning is knowing how reliable the company stands behind their product. That is especially true when it comes to repairs;warranty or otherwise. I am no longer up on heavy saltwater gear, but someone might want to give us all some feedback on the subject. I will stand behind Leupold optics..rifle scopes etc. because they can turn out repairs faster than anyone I have ever heard of. That is also why I drive Toyotas. Absolutely outstanding service done right the first time. Who is the best manufacturer in this regard gentlemen? Big tuna are stubborn, but sometimes you can persuade them into being towed into shallower water where it takes less time to crank them up. They still might hang out of gaff range doing figure 8s for a couple of hours. I always thought large tuna were the most punishing fighters I ever tangled with. We never caught one over 150.

 Wouldn`t it be a sight to behold someone who came tight on a big tuna with 90 pounds of drag ?
