The Jerry Brown Spectra is good stuff. Just put a topshot on it for the stretch.

Grouper Lips:
If you are swordfishing, I would suggest you get a 50 wide class reel. If you are going to be doing any deep drops or deeper grouper fishing you may want to have spectra as the line in the water, (little stretch and thinner diameter traversing the water column). If you are strictly budget conscious, monofilament nylon is the way to go. You would never want to spool up with flourocarbon: use this just for monofilament leader sections from 3 - 25 ft. ( and remember that flourcarbon is about as strong as it's stated test) If you are somewhat spirited and not afraid to venture from the normal, you could simply spool up totally with Jerry Brown Hollow Core braided spectra line (most likely white), splice a double line loop to the end. From here you could attach a B-B snap swivel for some specific applications (like direct connection to a cigar weight), or attach a loop to loop connection to any wind-on leader of you choice. Because of the high expense of the 80 lb. HC, you may be tempted to use 130 lb. braid instead. This is somewhat excessive for the drag setting you can get on a 50 lb. class reel but it is sweet for deep drop or compensating for minor abrasions that may be hard to see but you have plenty of line test to compensate. If you notice any chafing, just clip it off and make an in-line splice. (It may take you a little bit of reading to come up to speed on the wind-on business or the benefits of Hollow core spectra but if you start with it you can always learn as you go.) Good luck. Decide for yourself once you have assessed the trade-offs and figured out which solution best addresses your fishing needs. RT |
