Game For A Fight - Mako Shark

GULF OF MAINE — It seems comical that Laura Hayes, a 15-year-old first-time shark hunter, impatiently huffed "stupid fish," while struggling to reel in an 8-foot shortfin mako. You have to understand, Hayes didn't know she had a mako on the line.

After two blue sharks were caught on the charter boat Excalibur, no one did, not even Capt. Mike Jancovic.

"When I saw it was a mako, then everything changed," Jancovic said.

The shortfin mako is considered by many to be the fastest, most acrobatic gamefish in the world - not to mention the species most apt to attack a boat.
