Awesome!!! I have had many unusual contacts with sealife in the waters off the SE coast but have never known of or seen Killer Whales in these waters. Must have been an incredible sight.

I was actually out fishing that day as well and heard over the radio that a number of Killer Whales had been spotted on the east and north side of the island. Having trained as a marine biologist (some time ago) i was pretty disappointed i was on the south coast at the time however just as i rounded south west point (near sandy cay) a large fin came up infront of the boat. A few seconds later the head and back of a calf killer whale came up in front of me, no more than 50 yards off.
I never did see it or any other orcas after this. The fishing was pretty slow but i think i would be keeping a low profile if i was a fish and those whales were about!! |

Dang, free Willy and his family. Great pix.
There was a lady on a previous post from a few months ago doing a study on orcas in the Caribbean or in the Bahamas, can't remember, asking for any witness accounts. (Cono, just saw the "Whalelady's post below your thread. The only whales I have seen in Bahamian waters were beached at the Compleat Angler) I know they're out there but never seen em. I have seen pilot and sperm whales off S. Florida. There're also a couple videos out there of killers stealing hooked fish from anglers close to the boat. Thanks for sharing. Make sure you tell Guy. He'd get a kick out of it. My wife is from the JA and knows Guy. We know some folks in Cayman. Best, Juan Last edited by Captain Juan; 07-30-2008 at 04:03 PM.. |
